The NAP-Ag webinar on Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and National Adaptation Planning: Opportunities for the Agricultural Sectors will provide an overview of how EbA can be effectively integrated into agriculture sectors’ adaptation strategies and broader national adaptation planning processes. The webinar will focus on mainstreaming EbA in the formulation and implementation of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). It applies the OECD Rio Marker and CRS code systems, requiring that activities support at least one objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Projects scored as having biodiversity as a principal objective (Rio Marker 2) contribute 100% to commitments. Germany also began reporting the portions of other sectoral projects/programs that integrate biodiversity-relevant "sectoral components" (Rio Marker 1), such as natural reforestation in a water supply project. Only the financial amount supporting the biodiversity-related sectoral component is counted towards commitments. This allows Germany to mainstream biodiversity across development activities.

To catalyse essential action towards reducing food waste and achieving SDG 12.3, it's imperative to grasp the extent of food waste. Measuring food waste allows countries to comprehend the magnitude of the issue, thereby revealing the size of the opportunity, while establishing a baseline for tracking progress. The Food Waste Index Report 2021 marked a pivotal moment in understanding global food waste across retail, food service, and household sectors. It unveiled a greater availability of food waste data than anticipated, particularly at the household level, and revealed that per capita household food waste generation was more consistent worldwide than previously thought. The Food Waste Index Report 2024 builds upon its predecessor in three key ways: Firstly, it incorporates vastly expanded data points from around the world, providing a significantly more robust global and national estimates, detailed in Chapter 2 of the main report. Secondly, it expands on the SDG 12.3 food waste measurement methodology introduced in the 2021 report, offering enhanced guidance on measurement across retail, food service, and household sectors. This additional guidance delves into various methodologies, their strengths and limitations, and strategies for prioritising sub-sectors for measurement, as explored in Chapter 3. Lastly, the report transitions from focusing solely on food waste measurement to exploring solutions for food waste reduction. The chapter examines effective approaches to reducing food waste globally, with a spotlight on public-private partnerships in this 2024 report.

The world food supply is entirely dependent on the use of fertilisers. However, the current fertiliser production practices are not sustainable. Phosphate rock is a non-renewable resource, whereas the nitrogen-based fertilisers production is highly energy-intensive, currently relying on the use of fossil fuels. Domestic wastewater is an important nutrient carrier, but currently not exploited as recovery from diluted sewage is not efficient. Run4Life, short for “Recovery and Utilization of Nutrients 4 Low Impact FErtiliser”, proposes a radical new concept for wastewater treatment and nutrient recovery. It is based on source-separated collection of domestic wastewaters and kitchen waste, with each flow receiving optimal treatment for resource recovery and subsequent safe reuse. Nutrient recycling from wastewater opens a new paradigm in society. Therefore active measures such as knowledge brokerage activities will be developed as engagement strategy to advocate the institutional, legal and social acceptance of Run4Life nutrient recovery technologies. The Run4Life project works towards the following results: - Decrease dependence on primary nutrient resources and increase European resource security. - Reduce the adverse effects of nutrient emissions on the environment. - Closing water and nutrient cycles throughout the production and consumption value chain. - Improve the quality of collected data on nutrient flows to support investments in the recycling of recovered nutrients. - Create new business opportunities in the EU, to generate new green jobs and export industries around the recovery and recycling of nutrients, contributing to the exploitation of innovative solutions in the global market. - Improve policy and market conditions in Europe for large-scale deployment of innovation, providing evidence-based knowledge on the framework conditions that facilitates a wider transition to a Circular Economy in the EU. Proven and innovative technologies are implemented and further developed at four large scale demonstration sites. Within the objectives of the project, it is essential to ensure that the treatment systems developed by Run4Life, as well as the products obtained, are safe and of a consistent quality, environmentally friendly, socially accepted and techno-economically viable. At the same time, water related risks are increasing in frequency and scale in the context of climate change. How are investments shaping our economies and societies exposure to water risk? What role can the financial system play in supporting water security? And how can increased understanding of how finance both impacts and depends on water resources spur action towards greater water security? This OECD Green Talks LIVE on Tuesday 14 May 2024 from 15:00 to 16:00 CEST discussed the evolving landscape for assessing water risks to the financial system. OECD Policy Analyst Lylah Davies presented key findings and recommendations from recent OECD work on assessing the financial materiality of water-related risks, including the recently published paper “Watered down? Investigating the financial materiality of water-related risks” and was joined by experts to discuss relevant initiatives underway.
