The discussion highlighted the characteristics of the suburban layout: lower population densities than urban areas and land patterns that separate residences from shopping and other commercial development. Discussion continued with the associated street design and road network characteristics associated with this suburban layout. The operational and facilities particular to suburb streets were examined including their impacts on walking and biking.
The session also examined suburban design variations depending on when land development occurred, as well as when and how roads and highways were configured.

City Growth: Case Study of Denver, Colorado

Adelaide's transport system is facing increasing congestion, with morning traffic up 30% since 1997-98 and rush hour delays of 44 seconds per kilometer traveled. Currently over 80% of Adelaide residents use private vehicles to commute, contributing to air pollution and emissions. Solutions proposed include increasing public transportation through new buses, trams, and upgraded infrastructure, as well as policies to encourage greater public transit use and cycling. Bus rapid transit systems, which can carry as many passengers as 170 cars, may also help alleviate road congestion.
