I remember well of my visit to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. I stood in front of one of the Kouros (Archaic Youth) statue, feeling a bit small when confronted with thousands of years of history before me. I was captivated by his mesmerising and charming smile. I could see that the statue can be quite easily mistaken as a real person. I never quite understand what really drove the Greek to create these wonderful sculptures. They were simply thousands of year ahead of other civilisations, in sculpture.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. ABOUT THE NIKE SAMOTHRACE: The Nike of Samothrace was created around 190 B.C. The winged goddess was known to be the daughter of the Titans, Pallas and Styx. Her siblings were Zelos, Kratos, and Bia. After she helped Zeus exile the Titans from Mt. Olympus she became the goddess of victory.Nike frequently appears throughout Greek art and was a symbol of victory in war, sports, and poetry contests .The Nike of Samothrace first stood on a monument that commemorated a naval victory. The Nike is supposed to seem as if she is presently arriving in a fierce headwind, her great wings still in the air. Her body appears to turn a little bit so that she can remain balanced. The Nike exemplifies the expressive Hellenistic style. The approximate date is based on the style and similarities to other sculptures from Pergamum. The pottery uncovered in the area where this sculpture was built portrays a a connection to the island of Rhodes (in the southeast Aegean). The final uncovered Rhodian naval victory was in 190 B.C., when the Rhodian navy was victorious over the Seleucids. Perhaps the Rhodians built the Nike in order to show how thankful they were for this victory. The Nike is a great example of the new usage of a traditional subject combined with the drama of the Hellenistic Period that would come.
5. ABOUT THE TEMPLE OF HERA: The Temple of Hera was built around 550 BC by Greek colonists. It is the oldest existing temple in Paestum. Archaeologists in the Eighteenth-century named it "The Basilica" considering that they incorrectly thought that it was a Roman building. People finally came to the conclusion that the goddess who was worshiped here was Hera. She was the queen of the Olympian deities. Hera is a daughter of Cronus and Rhea and she is the wife and the sister of Zeus. Hera was primarily worshipped as a goddess of marriage and birth.
