All matter, no matter how complex, can be broken down into molecules which can be broken down further into atomic elements. All web interfaces can be broken down down the same way. Atomic Design provides a methodology for building an effective design system. It consists of five distint stages: atoms, molecules, organisms, templates and pages.
How do APIs and IoT relate? The answer is not as simple as merely adding an API on top of a dumb device, but rather about understanding the architectural patterns for implementing an IoT fabric. There are typically two or three trends:
Exposing the device to a management framework
Exposing that management framework to a business centric logic
Exposing that business layer and data to end users.
This last trend is the IoT stack, which involves a new shift in the separation of what stuff happens, where data lives and where the interface lies. For instance, it's a mix of architectural styles between cloud, APIs and native hardware/software configurations.

Application Architecture: The Next Wave | MuleSoftBui Kiet
The explosion of APIs, SaaS applications, and mobile devices has created a massive integration wave. The resulting shift in the way we connect is forcing an IT mega change unlike anything we've seen before. As the development model moves from writing lots of code to composing APIs together, a new generation of middle tier application architecture is being born.
You have built a IaaS cloud and can deliver compute, storage and bandwidth to your customers. Is that enough to hold on to your customer base, or do you wish to deliver value added services such as platform services and databases? Join us our session and we will demonstrate how you could deploy higher margin services such as Database-as-a-Service, Caching-as-a-Service, Load Balancing-as-a-Service, MongoDB-as-a-Service, and many more - instantly without high capital investments. In this session, we will also cover different services that your customers will like and how you can make them available on your cloud and integrate them with your metering, billing and other business processes.
This presentation discusses Mule ESB and how to simplify integration. It briefly mentions a brief history of integration, information silos, SOA. It also highlights several integration patterns.

As Operational Technologies (OT) like embedded devices, control and monitoring systems are increasingly integrated with Information Technology (IT) systems running in the back office, interaction patterns between systems are becoming more complex and diverse. Publish-Subscribe is the most commonly used messaging pattern for OT systems. It provides the real-time information access, scalability, and loose coupling required for integration of these types of systems. IT and OT integration, however, commonly requires messaging patterns that provide stronger end-to-end properties, such as Guaranteed Delivery, Request-Reply, and (load-balancing) Queues. RTI is greatly enhancing its infrastructure software with new messaging patterns that combine the performance, scalability, and reliability needed by OT systems with the integration and flexible messaging capabilities of IT systems.

When the Glue Conferences started in 2008, “Glue” was roughly about “web oriented architecture”, “interop for the web”, and coupling that’s as loose as possible but no looser. Nine years later, we’re weaving a truly huge network of APIs, and the API metadata -- the API spec -- is the lynchpin of intentional loose coupling. It’s the single source of truth for what a service does, it’s the versioned contract between consumers and producers, it automates docs and exploration and testing and CI/CD and integration, and it’s key to productizing services. You can now benefit from RAML’s modeling features and Open API’s ubiquity with a new open-source engine, the API Modeling Framework, that glues them into a unified document model and domain model; it’s an open and extensible metadata engine for APIs that provides round-trip interoperability between formats, a common programmatic interface to the metadata, and a powerful kernel for API tooling.
Gluecon 2017: API Modelling Framework - A Toolbox for Interacting With API S...MuleSoft
The main goal of Mulesoft's API Modelling Framework (AMF) is to provide a way for developers to interact with API specifications written in either RAML or OpenAPI. This talk will give an overview of the API Modelling Framework, a set of tools to model, query and expose all aspects of an API specification.
During this talk, we will go through several use cases, some simple and some more complex ones, to showcase how this can be useful at all stages of the API design process. We will show how the API Modelling Framework stores model and data for the model in a single unified data graph, and how it persists and allows querying using a declarative language. We will also show how, thanks to the formal qualities of the tools, automatic reasoning can be used to add inferred data to the model in order to solve particular data integration scenarios.

Applying UX principles and methods to APIs MuleSoft
Developers learn to cope with quality attributes like maintainability, security, and performance. But usability is usually left behind. It belongs to the domain of UI developers and interaction designers. Yet even if the code doesn't have any UI, it has users: the programmers that have to use or maintain the APIs. This talk introduces usability concepts and practices applicable to the design of APIs.
Secure by design: Scaling security across the enterpriseMuleSoft
By 2020, Gartner predicts 60% of digital businesses will suffer major service failures due to the inability of the IT security team to manage digital risk in new technology and use cases. Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
