The Natural Approach is a language acquisition method developed in the 1980s based on how children acquire their first language. It focuses on comprehending meaningful content rather than form. The goal is to develop basic interpersonal communication skills. The approach has 4 stages: 1) Pre-Production where students are shy and non-verbal, using pictures. 2) Early Production using 1-2 words. 3) Speech Emergence using phrases and sentences. 4) Intermediate Fluency able to understand for academic purposes and do complex tasks. The levels provide useful guidance for both new and experienced ELL teachers.
