Nicolae Tonitza was a Romanian
painter and graphic artist, interpreter of
"colorful sadness" and some sincere
feelings of mighty and long-awaited
rebellion.

15. Painter’schildhood
 He was born on April 13, 1886, in Barlad, the first of five children of
Anastasia and Neculai Toniţă. He attends the boys' primary school in
Barlad. In 1902 he left the naughty village to join the Belle-Arte National
School in Iasi, having Gheorghe Popovici and Emanoil Bardasare among
his teachers (but he will not be able to take his graduation diploma because
he participates in the last year on a strike of students) and Stefan
Dimitrescu and Leon Viorescu amongst his colleagues, whom he will make
a long friendship with.

22. The life of the painter
 Sabin Balasa was born in Oltenia, in Dobriceni, on 17th of June 1932. His father
was a priest and his mother was a teacher in a primary school. They had turned
their home into an etno-graphical and archeological museum, with over 3000
paintings. He continued his studies in Craiova and he graduated in Bucharest. He
was very keen on Italy which he had visited many times where he was awarded
with different prizes but also where he painted especially in Florence. He felt the
same connection for Iasi where he had painted a lot of his famous paintings on the
walls of the Lost Steps Hall of Al. I. Cuza University , which he decorated with his
art.. There he constantly felt at home, that is why he used to say laughing: “I am a
native man of Moldovia with a native man of Oltenia roots.
