process. In the aftermath of World War I, it began to
practice a philosophy of passive resistance to British
restrictions on communications and political activity. The
party played an integral role in the Indian Independence
Movement, organizing more than 70 million Indians in
opposition to colonial rule by Great Britain. After the
independence movement, the party fell under the
leadership of the Nehru-Gandhi family and became the
most prominent political party in India for many years.
