Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) has evolved from early uses of flight simulators in the 1950s and mainframe computers running instructional programs in schools in the 1960s. By the 1980s and 1990s, multimedia PCs with CD-ROMs providing animation and sound were being used in classrooms with one computer per classroom. Today, computer labs with internet access in schools allow online activities, email, forums, blogs, wikis and more for language learning. Blended learning, which combines face-to-face and computer-mediated activities, has become an integrated approach for both teachers and students.
