The Greek educational system provides free and mandatory education for children ages 6 to 15. Students first attend kindergarten at age 5, then elementary school from ages 6 to 12. They then attend gymnasium, or junior high school, from ages 13 to 15, completing the mandatory period. After gymnasium, students can choose to attend lyceum, or senior high school, for a more comprehensive education, or they can pursue vocational training at technical institutes.
