Presentation of Ferslev School Ferslev School is situated south of a major town, Aalborg (approx. 120.000 inhab.) 360 pupils from the age of 6 – 16 29 teachers and 10 educationalists The children are at school between 8 – 14.30 After school the children up to 12 years can go to after-school activities (until 5 pm) Children from 12 – 16 can join youth-classes in the evenings from Monday - Friday
Global Citizen – global thinking as a standard of education Timeframe (August 2008 – June 2010, actually until 2018.. And then hopefully it is fully integrated) Background (We were three schools in Aalborg that wanted to work with a project that would broaden the students’ horizons so they would appreciate the similarities and differencies between peoples and learn to value diversities)

Global Citizen – global thinking as a standard of education The purpose of the project (We wish that the pupils learn to see themselves as citizens in two communities, ’The National Community’ and ’The Global Community’. Likewise they should learn to think globally and act locally. They must learn to see the consequences of their actions in a global context).
Global Citizen – global thinking as a standard of education We should teach the pupils to aquire qualities, skills, and knowledge so they can act in the ’global society of knowledge’. Hospi tality Tole-rance Soli-darity Empathy Equality Curious ness Skills Krea tivity Open ness Viability Responsibility Helpfull ness THE GLOBAL CITIZEN’S SCHOOL
To become somebody and to be It is important for the pupils to be skillful, confident to be aware of their social roots and their local environment to act locally, nationally, and globally and thereby reduce the injustice and inequalities in the world
Awareness of global science To be able to act on that awareness you must be Concerned about environmental problems Protect nature and the biosphere Reduce the use of recources, raw materials, and energy Use energy with concern Recycle when it is possible
To build up relations Help others – locally and globally Get in contact with people from different parts of the world Use computers to connect pupils from different parts of the world
Questions we want to bring into focus in Ferslev How is it to go to school in other countries? How do they live? How do they play? What do they eat? What traditions do they have and practise? Do children and youngsters work? How is it to be a teenager? What kind of music do they listen to? What kind of sport do they practise?
Our first steps…. We planned different activities among the three schools of Aalborg (one of the schools have 41 nationalities located in an area with council houses, there is a school in the countryside (that’s us) and a typical townschool) Joint music, sports, dance, and cooking events Each school has a website with information about the project A topic-week at the school concerning an environmental conference (like the one in Copenhagen in December 2009) ’ A Global Citizen’s Classroom’ (with a huge globe, with posters, souvenirs from all over the world, computers with web-cams, maps from different countries….….) Always to remember to tell the other colleagues and the children, their parents, and the surrounding community about our project. It is very important to be visible!
