Shari Hofschire served as Director of the Center for Innovation in Arts Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha for ten years. Under her leadership, the Center received awards for its work in arts education and community engagement. She also directed Prairie Visions Institute, organizing professional development for teachers in Nebraska and Iowa. Additionally, Hofschire developed arts education curriculum and materials for various projects and organizations, securing over $440,000 in grant funding. She has extensive experience in teaching, conducting workshops, and presenting at conferences on arts education topics.
1. Shari Hofschire served as Director of the Center for Innovation in Arts Education for ten
years at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The Center provides innovation and
leadership in arts education on collaborative projects involving K-16 educators, arts
institutions and organizations. Under her leadership the Center received the 2008
Chancellors Strategic Planning Award for Community Engagement and the 2011
Nebraska Art Teachers AssociationRoscoe Shields Award for “sustained service and
commitment to art education.”
She has served as Director of the Prairie Visions Institute since 2005, organizing the
week-long professional development summer institute for teachers and other educators
from across Nebraska and western Iowa. Prairie Visions has been Nebraska’s leader in
comprehensive arts education for 28 years.
In 1999 Hofschire organized the CADRE II: The Arts program at UNO and served as
CADRE II Director and seminar instructor. CADRE II was a graduate induction program
in Comprehensive Arts Education for first-year teachers. This collaborative program with
the College of Education has provided integrated arts curriculum to over 120 teachers in
six metro Omaha area school districts. Hofschire has conducted staff development
workshops and in-services for school districts, as well as giving state and national
presentations at numerous professional conferences.
In 2006-2007, Hofschire was part of the team that developed the educational materials
and thematic curriculum and videos for the Nebraska Masterpieces project. Ms.
Hofschire also has helped develop the curriculum content for all the posters for the Iowa
West Public Art project for the Iowa West Foundation, as well as the educational
curriculum materials and lessons for the Fertile Ground mural for the Bemis Center for
Contemporary Arts. During her tenure as Director, Shari received over $440,000 in grant
funding for these curriculum and professional development projects.
Hofschire has been active in state arts organizations, serving as Treasurer for the
Nebraska Alliance for Arts Education and President of Nebraskans for the Arts. She has
twice been recognized as Educator of the Year for Higher Education by the Nebraska Art
Teachers Association. She recently retired as President of the Board of Directors of
African Culture Connection and has served in that capacity on the boards of the Omaha
Childrens Museum, Nebraska Shakespeare Festival, Omaha Ballet, UNO Alumni
Association, and was founding president of Friends of Art.
Shari was selected to attend the Teachers Institute at the National Gallery of Art in
Washington D.C. and served on the Advisory Council for the US Department of Education
Community Discovered grant for art and technology. She was also selected for
Leadership Omaha and Omaha 2000.
She was a member of the Board of Education for Westside Community Schools for 15
years.
