This document discusses strategies for ensuring food security in Ethiopia. It argues that Ethiopia's overdependence on cereals like teff has led to a vicious cycle of low productivity, poverty, and environmental degradation. It proposes diversifying crop production to include potatoes and cassava, which have higher yields and are better suited to Ethiopia's varied climate zones. FAO defines roots and tubers as plants yielding starchy roots, tubers, rhizomes, corms and stems.
They are used for human food, animal feed and for manufacturing starch, alcohol and fermented beverages including beer.
They contain mainly carbohydrates (largely starches that account for 16-24 percent of their total weight).
The Ethiopian livestock population is almost entirely composed of indigenous animals.
Recent estimates showed that 97.8%, 1.9%, and 0.3% of cattle are indigenous, hybrid, and exotic breeds, respectively.
The estimates for sheep are 99.6% and 0.3% for local breeds and hybrids, respectively;
for poultry 81.7%, 10.9%, and 7.4% are indigenous, hybrids and exotic, respectively.
Nearly all goats (99.9%) are indigenous breeds (CSA, 2020a).
