During the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines, society was stratified with Peninsulares, Insulares, and mestizos at the top and indigenous peoples like Indios and Negritos at the bottom. A new class of educated Filipinos called Ilustrados emerged who sought political reforms through revolution that would improve conditions for Filipinos under Spanish rule.
