The
Endocrine
System
Basic Definition
THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM- IS THE
COLLECTION OF GLANDS THAT
PRODUCE HORMONES THAT
REGULATE METABOLISM, GROWTH
AND DEVELOPMENT, TISSUE
FUNCTION, SEXUAL FUNCTION,
REPRODUCTION, SLEEP, AND MOOD,
AMONG OTHER THINGS.
Pictorial Overview
•Hypothalmus
•Pineal Gland
•Pituitary Gland
•Thyroid
•Pancreas
•Adrenal Glands

Types of hormones
SOME DIFFERENT TYPES OF HORMONES ARE
 RELEASING HORMONE-THYROTROPIN SECRETED BY THE PITUITARY G.
 GROWTH HORMONE- OXYTOCIN- IS A POWERFUL HORMONE AND ACTS
AS A NEUROTRANSMITTER IN THE BRAIN. WHEN WE HUG OR KISS A
LOVED ONE, OXYTOCIN LEVELS INCREASE. THYROXINE-IS THE MAIN
HORMONE SECRETED INTO THE BLOODSTREAM BY THE THYROID GLAND.
IT PLAYS VITAL ROLES IN DIGESTION, HEART AND MUSCLE FUNCTION,
BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF BONES. CALCITONIN - IS A
HORMONE SECRETED BY THE THYROID GLAND THAT REDUCES THE
CONCENTRATION OF BLOOD CALCIUM LEVEL
 INSULIN-IS A HORMONE MADE BY THE PANCREAS THAT ALLOWS YOUR
BODY TO USE SUGAR (GLUCOSE) FROM CARBOHYDRATES IN THE FOOD
THAT YOU EAT FOR ENERGY OR TO STORE GLUCOSE FOR FUTURE USE.
INSULIN HELPS KEEPS YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL FROM GETTING TOO
HIGH.
HORMONES ARE RELEASED FROM VARIOUS ENDOCRINE GLANDS TO SERVE
DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS IN THE BODY.
Hypothalmus-
Pineal-
Pituitary-
Thyroid-
Pancreas-
Adrenal-
Ovaries-
Testes-
Helps Govern the Endocrine
System via the Pituitary gland.
This gland secretes melatonin, and it may therefore be
part of the body's sleep-regulation apparatus.
Important in controlling growth and development.
A gland that makes and stores hormones that help regulate
the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature.
Produces insulin and other substances that help the
body digest food.
Produce hormones that help the body control blood sugar,
burn protein and fat, react to stressors like a major illness
or injury namely Cortisol and adrenaline.
Produce and release two groups of sex hormones—
progesterone and estrogen.
Produce sperm and testosterone
Your Hormones are all affected by
your diet, sleep habits, stress
management abilities, weight, and
health history.
Health Tips For Endocrine Care
 Eat a Balanced Diet:
The body knows when it’s out
of balance.
 Skip the junk food.
 Ditch the dairy products.
 Buy non-genetically
modified products.
 Manage your Stress levels
 Also be sure to
take in some
healthy seaweed,
superfood, and
herbs and spices all
rich in antioxidants.
 Get rest.
 Find the right
exercise for you.
 Deep Breathing
 In order to have good blood, we must
breathe well. Full, deep inspirations of pure
air which fill the lungs with oxygen, purify
the blood. They impart to it a bright color,
and send it, a life-giving current, to every
part of the body. A good respiration
soothes the nerves; it stimulates the
appetite and renders digestion more
perfect; and it induces sound, refreshing
sleep.--
