Ancient Egypt consisted of two kingdoms along the fertile Nile River valley. Farmers grew crops like wheat, barley, vegetables, and fruits and raised cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry. The annual flooding of the Nile provided rich soil for agriculture. Farmers prepared fields after flooding receded and planted crops in November, then helped with harvesting in spring. The Egyptians also engaged in trade, bringing goods from places like Punt on the east African coast.
