2. What is Renaissance and why is
called like that?
O Renaissance means rebirth and was an amazing movement which
saw tremendous developments in art, technology, science and many
other areas. Is called like that because Renaissance did a lot of
changes.
O The developments of the Renaissance started to change the way
Europeans thought about the world in the 1500s and 1600s.
3. Motives for travelling
O One reason for travelling was adventure.
O Another reason was overpopulation. Portuguese and Spanish rulers
wanted more land to grow food for their growing populations.
O Religion was also an important factor. Most of the explorers believed
that God was supporting them because they intended to take the
Christian religion to the new lands that they discovered.
O Another factor was wealth. The main reason for sailing both east and
west was to find a trade route to India.

4. The impact of the American empires
O Advantages:
O The European empires in the New World were the foundations of the
USA and the other countries which make up North, South and Central
America today.
O New foods came from the Spanish and Portuguese rulers.
O Europe´s trade grew enormously as a result.

O Disadvantages:
O The impact on the people in the Americas was disastrous. The
conquistadores destroyed the great civilisations of the Maya, the
Aztecs and the Incas.
O Many Native Americans were enslaved. They were forced to work on
plantations and in mines. Huge numbers were wiped out by diseases
that the Spanish brought with them, but which the Native Americans
had no defence against.

6. What do Renaissance maps tell us
about Renaissance minds?
O The Christian World can see God with angels praising him. On earth we see
the Holy City of Jerusalem at the centre of the world. All Christian countries
are arranged around Jerusalem into one Christian Church.
O They were trying to show Europe as it really was, rather than Europe as a
Christian community.
O In many ways, this is the story
of the Renaissance – old ideas
mixed with new ideas and
knowledge.
7. Modern historians argue that…
O Renaissance artists and scientists were not just influenced by Ancient
Greece: Many artists took their inspiration from art and buildings of
Ancient Greece and Rome. Others were influenced by strange goods
and stories coming back across the Atlantic from the New World.
O During the Renaissance period the
Church remained very strong: The
Renaissance challenge the power of the
Catholic Church. Some of the new
thinking eventually led to a great split in
the Church called the Reformation.
8. Modern historians argue that…
O The Renaissance made very little difference to the everyday lives of
most Europeans: Some women from wealthy families did become
powerful and important. Life for the great majority of women did not
really change much. Ordinary Europeans had very little say.

O Italy: Renaissance was a development which
took place in Italy between about 1450s and
the early 1500s.
O Church: Renaissance men and women broke
free from the influence of the medieval Church.
O Art and culture: Renaissance artists like

from the simpler styles of art and the medieval

technology began to develop as a result.

much more advanced. Rulers began to listen
to the people they ruled.

famous?
O Leonardo the painter: He is most famous as a painter. As well as the
Mona Lisa, he painted masterpieces such as THE LAST SUPPER.
O Leonardo the engineer: He was also a brilliant engineer. Leonardo also
came up with designs for a submarine and the flying machine.
12. Why Leonardo Da Vinci still so
famous?
O Leonardo the scientist: Leonardo was also fascinated by nature and the
world around him. He kept detailed notebooks in which he made sketches
of plants, animals and rocks.
O He was an exceptional thinker who produced ground-breaking work in art,
engineering and science.
