Monitor indicators of genetic diversity from space using Earth Observation dataSpatial Genetics
Genetic diversity within and among populations is essential for species persistence. While targets and indicators for genetic diversity are captured in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, assessing genetic diversity across many species at national and regional scales remains challenging. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) need accessible tools for reliable and efficient monitoring at relevant scales. Here, we describe how Earth Observation satellites (EO) make essential contributions to enable, accelerate, and improve genetic diversity monitoring and preservation. Specifically, we introduce a workflow integrating EO into existing genetic diversity monitoring strategies and present a set of examples where EO data is or can be integrated to improve assessment, monitoring, and conservation. We describe how available EO data can be integrated in innovative ways to support calculation of the genetic diversity indicators of the GBF monitoring framework and to inform management and monitoring decisions, especially in areas with limited research infrastructure or access. We also describe novel, integrative approaches to improve the indicators that can be implemented with the coming generation of EO data, and new capabilities that will provide unprecedented detail to characterize the changes to Earth’s surface and their implications for biodiversity, on a global scale.

3. PRADIP : Green Initiative By NTPC
NTPC Limited, a public sector, Maharatna Company, is the largest power generating
company of India since being established in 1975. NTPC has emerged as an Integrated Power
Major company spreading in all over the country. Present installed capacity of NTPC is
55,126 MW (including 7,551 MW through JVs/Subsidiaries) comprising of 52 NTPC Stations
(22 Coal based stations, 7 combined cycle gas/liquid fuel-based stations, 2 Hydro based
station, 1 Wind based station), 9 Joint Venture stations (9 coal based and one gas based) and
11 renewable energy projects.
NTPC took up implementation of Paperless Office working environment to all the key units
spread across India for its end to end business requirement in 2017. The system was
implemented by utilizing the industry best practices and sustainable, proven technology for
minimizing the use of papers in its course of business. Paperless Office system was aimed to
make the management of corporate information easier with focus towards digitization and
paperless office environment leading to improved efficiency, transparency, better control,
reduced costs & carbon footprint.
4. PRADIP : Green Initiative By NTPC
During 2017, NTPC spent Rs. 5.52 Crore (Office Stationary Rs 1.00 Crore + Cartridges-Rs.
4.52Crore) on consumables, A4-size paper consumption was 3.32 Crore pages during year
2017 equivalent to 4100 trees.
In NTPC Conventional manual method of physical file movement in office was time
consuming affair. The Approval note/file initiated by any official would take weeks and months
to reach the office of Competent Authority for approval. This was because file was moving
from desk to desk manually with entry in register. The physical file would also move from
State to State demographically spread across India. Sometimes the files would get untraceable
in the transit.
File tracking was cumbersome and excessive space was consumed by paper files. Further one
could not monitor the performance of officials and could not check unnecessary delays in the
processing. Moreover, there were many cases of misplaced files or torn/damaged files that put
inconvenience to officials in decision making.
The physical movement of official documents incurs a lot of time and requires a continuous
monitoring from desk to desk before the final decision is made by the senior officials.
Consequently, many crucial decisions get delayed due to the slow movement of files and/or
unavailability or absence of the senior officials in the office for clearing these files.
5. PRADIP : Green Initiative By NTPC
The immediate need in this scenario was to have a system where an authorized employee
can locate the required documents and/or files in the shortest possible time, update and
share them with other relevant users and eventually store them with proper reference. This
will make the system efficient by speeding up the decision making process. Typical
