2. Our National Day – what does it mean?
The date of our national day is
the 1st of January.
The Slovak Republic was founded on 1st January 1993.
Slovakia was an integral part of Czechoslovakia before,
now we are 2 separate countries.
Our first Slovak president was Michal Kováč.
4. People here usually go to fire the fireworks, because
we also celebrate the New Year the 1st of January, of
course. They do nothing special in the afternoon or in
the evening, because a night before they celebrated
NewYears´s Eve.
I usually stay home with my family at midnight and we
look through the window to see fireworks.
We don´t go to school or to work on the 1st of January,
because we are on Xmas holidays (they normally last till
the 7th of January).

12. 17th of November – why it is so important?
•On 17th of November we remember the end of socialism.
•We call it Nežná Revolúcia or Sametová Revolúcia = Welvet
Revolution, because there were no war (fortunately). It was
in 1989.
•On 17 of November , Slovak and Czech students met in
Prague to the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death
of Jan Opletal and the closing
of Czech universities in 1939 by Nazi Germany.
13. •In Slovakia, this day is a BANK HOLIDAY, so we
don´t go to school (or our parents to work) on 17th
of November.
•On 17th of November I usually stay at home with my
family or I catch up with my friends.
