The partial positive charge on the carbonyl carbon tends to make the hydrogens on the a-carbons (the a-hydrogens) easily removed as protons and the resulting carbanion (enolate ion) is resonance stabilized by resonance with the carbonyl t-electron system. an ? hydrogen enolate ion BH When the two carbonyl compounds are the same, the process of addition is termed self- condensation. When they are different, this constitutes a crossed aldol condensation. An aromatic aldehyde is incapable of self condensation so that such a compound can act only as the carbonyl component of an aldol condensation. When an aromatic aldehyde is employed in such a condensation, a, p-hydroxy aldehyde or ketone is formed which spontaneously loses the elements of water to afford an a,B-unsaturated carbonyl compound. In the present experiment the enolate ion from acetophenone is allowed to react with benzaldehyde. The product of the ensuing condensation is benzalacetone.
