A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. CAMERA
• Throughout the music video there is a range of camera
angles used, from long shots to close ups. These
different angles are used strategically throughout the
video so that we are able to see the different scenarios
played out. For example, a lot of the performance
sections of the video are filmed from a long shot so that
the viewer is able to see the whole band as they perform
the song. However, the scene where Pete Wentz kisses
his love interest is a close up as this is the focus of the
clip, meaning we do not look at anything else but the
main action.
4. MISE-EN-SCENE
• The mise-en-scene plays a major role in this video as
the main feature of the plot is that the crew filming this
music video are all monkeys. This makes the video very
unique and different as it uses animal actors instead of
humans – however some may be against this as it could
be considered unethical to use animal actors. This could
be symbolic of how the band feel about the music
industry – perhaps they feel that the people who work on
music video shoots are all ‘monkeys’. During the
performance scenes, there is a big ‘FOB’ LED sign (the
bands initials), which helps to advertise the band in their
own video.
5. SOUND
• For the most part, the sound in this video is non-diegetic
as the song ‘Thnks Fr Th Mmrs’ plays over the entirety of
the video. However, it could be considered to be diegetic
during the performance scenes as the band are
supposed to be playing the song. Alongside this, the only
other sound that we hear is diegetic – throughout the
video, every so often we hear noise coming from the
monkeys as they are talking to/directing the band. This
helps us engage in the narrative of the video as we feel
as though we are listening to a conversation.
6. EDITING
• As the majority of this video is either showing a
performance of a band or following a narrative, the the
editing is rather simple. As the song is quite fast paced,
there are quite a few jump cuts – especially during the
performance sections as the video is trying to keep up
with the tempo of the band. There are also a few
panning shots within these scenes as it allows us to see
all of the band as they play. Additionally, the lighting in
this video is quite high key as there are a lot of lights on
the stage to highlight the band.
8. CAMERA
• As the music video follows a narrative, there are a
lot of long/mid shots as it allows us to see the full
scene and therefore gage what is going on. For
example, the scenes where the girl is in the street
are often long shots as it allows us to view her in
comparison to the rest of the street. There are a few
close ups of the girl as well as this, as it allows us to
really see her face and capture her emotions. The
girl in this video is supposed to be poor and
spending many nights on the street, so with the
close ups the viewer can see how she has been
dressed to look quite rough.
9. MISE-EN-SCENE
• The mise-en-scene used in this video is important to the
narrative as it covers quite serious topics such as alcohol
and drug abuse. Whilst this easily could have just been
implied, the director of this video has decided to include
this in the mise-en-scene for the viewer to see, which
makes the video quite hard hitting. The girl is dressed in
baggy tracksuits and thick coats, which emphasizes how
she is found on the streets as this is very stylistic of that.
Again, to put further emphasis on the streets, there are
not many clips that are shot inside and so this is
symbolic of how she spends most of her time outside.
10. SOUND
• For the most part, the sound in this video is non-
diegetic as it just uses the song over the top of
the video. The only time that there is the use of
diegetic sound is in the beginning before the
narrative begins and before the song plays – we
can hear a girl speaking, asking someone to
come back and that she will ‘treat them nice’. As
the whole video centers around one girl who
falls into prostitution, we can assume that this is
the voice of that girl.
11. EDITING
• Depending on the time of day, the video uses both high
and low key lighting. As girls who work in the sex
industry are often referred to as ‘women of the night’ (a
reference that is made in the video), the use of low-key
lighting at nighttime could reflect that this is a dark time
to be out on the streets. There are a lot of fast jump cuts
used in this video as the song itself is very fast paced, as
well as the lifestyle of the girl in the video, so not only
could these jump cuts be used to keep up with the tempo
of the song but also to symbolise the girls fast lifestyle.
13. CAMERA
• The shot types used in this video vary a lot as it is quite
a faced paced video with a lot of narrative, meaning
there is a lot of chances for different shot types to be
used. For example, the video starts off with a long shot
of a street, and we can see two people climbing out from
behind a bush and walking over to a house. Then, 20
seconds later, we see an extreme close up of Dave
Grohl, which not only lets us see the emotion on his face
as he dreams, but also introduces us to the singer of the
band and main character in this video. It also creates a
clean transition from Dave in his bed to Dave in his
dream.
14. MISE-EN-SCENE
• There is a lot of different, unique mise-en-scene used in
this video and is arguably the selling point. As the two
main characters have different dreams, there is a lot of
different props and outfits used to relate to each. With
Dave Grohl’s dream, we see a lot of people dressed up
in punk outfits, as well as odd props such as big hands
and a giant telephone (which is symbolic in this video as
Taylor Hawkin’s rings Dave Grohl from his dream). In
Taylor Hawkin’s dream, we see the two dressed in
ordinary clothes, whilst there are two more characters
who are dressed in fancy suits. There is a fight in this
scene and so there is the use of props such as
chainsaws and nun chucks.
15. SOUND
• The only sound we hear in this music video is
the song as it plays throughout the whole video.
The narrative is a disjuncture from the song as it
holds a very different meaning to the lyrics. This
could therefore make you tune out the lyrics to
the song and consider it to be background noise
as the main focus is on what is actually
happening in the video.
16. EDITING
• There are a few jump cuts in this video as it keeps up
with the pace of the song, however there are not many
as there is a narrative and too many jump cuts would
prevent the viewer from engaging or understanding the
story. There is a lot of different colour treatments used in
this video depending on the scene – when they are in
bed it is black and white, Dave’s dream has an orange
filter and Taylor’s dream has a green/blue filter. This
helps to distinguish between the different settings. At the
end of the video, there are many effects added as the
band wakes up and performs – there are flashing colours
and a fuzzy/grainy effect added which is very unique and
will help capture the attention of the viewer.
