2. REASON FOR RESEARCH
 In order to create to create a successful music video for my
genre I must first know what the criteria for my genre is, in
order to find what these are I have analysed 5 music videos
from varies artist.

3. VIDEO1-MUMFORD AND SON-WINTER
WINDS
Area Analysed Description
Location The location of this video is set on a empty road and fields, these are
both related to folk as folk is often associated with the country and
village areas where there is no city or tall building.
clothing The clothing that was used where all village/farm clothes that would
defiantly be associated with folk, this video and artist is clearly tried to
show the type of genre through this image and just through the music.
Probs The only main probs that where used where the musical instruments
and plus a chair that he dragged through the field which I think has no
relevance to the genre.
Cinematography There seems to be quite a lot of close-up of the lip-syncing to the music,
also a lot of tracking back or forward with the band to keep all of them
in frame, there is hardly a shot without at least one shot with the band
in it.
Narrative The narrative is about the change in seasons and that the winter can
be a cold and lonely time for some.
Effects In this video slow-motion was used.
Continuity/Montage There is no story plot to follow just the band walking down a road and
field, so it is more of a montage .

4. VIDEO2-JAMES BLUNT-CARRY YOU COME
Area Analysed Description
Location There are multiple locations used in this video, the main three are near a
cliff side, on the street roads and in a train or train station, these are
complete different locations to the first video and have relevance to the
song as its about travelling which all these place are. Another location is in
a warzone which massively depicts with the narrative.
clothing Unlike the first video the clothing choose is very plain and modern, as the
main signer(James Blunt) is wearing jeans and a leather/denim overcoat
which are more toward the rock or indie sides of genre clothing.
Probs In this video there some vital bits of probs used to show the narrative, a
necklace and photo are used to show the relationship that the man and
woman have or once had. The man Is also carrying a bag round which also
relates to traveling.
Cinematography Again a lot of lip syncing close ups are used, and again the tracks in
movement with the singer, although the song is sad and relatively slow the
tracking helps to keep the pace fast enough to stay interested.
Narrative The narrative is that the man has gone of to war and he has died form an
explosion and that the woman has been left alone at home.
Effects A grey filter was used on all shots to create the sad mood and relate to the
fact that he has died at war, also some slow motion shots where used to
emphasis some shots to create more emotion.
Continuity/ There is continuity in this video as there is a storyline to follow as he leaves
Montage home then dies at war and then the girl is at the cliff crying over her loss.

5. VIDEO3-THE SCRIPT-BREAKEVEN
Area Analysed Description
Location There was again three locations used in this video, one was at
some type of club or bar where the band are performing and the
others are inside in a empty house with low key lighting, the last
Is at the coast near a lighthouse, the coast is often related to
being alone and unhappy relationships.
clothing Jeans, leather jacket and t-shirts are all worn, these are all more
toward the indie side again
Probs There are only a couple of main probs used in this video, one of
them are a car which the man drives, the other probs are only
musical instruments which are used in most music videos in
every genre.
Cinematography Again there are loads of close ups of the singers lip syncing, like
the others the duration of the shots are all long, these is an a
occurring thing with videos is this genre.
Narrative The narrative of this story is that the man still ha s feeling for the
girl however the girl has moved on.
Effects Again a lot of grey filters where used, this helps to create the sad
mood.
Continuity/Montage There is a basic storyline but there are a lot of ellipsis and shots
of the band performing.

6. VIDEO4-ED SHEERAN-SMALL BUMP
Area Analysed Description
Location This video is located in one place which is inside a hospital, this
was done to relate to the narrative and also to centre the
attention on the artist.
clothing The clothing are pretty modern and casual like a hoodie, jeans
etc. this is what the modern folk/indie artist are wearing in this
modern age.
Probs There are only objects seen at the beginning of a clock and some
hospital equipment, normally Ed Sheeran is associated to
perform with a acoustic guitar yet this video doesn’t have one.
Cinematography This video start with close ups of miscellaneous objects then to a
long shot of the man sitting in a hospital corridor, it then tracks in
to him and crabs round him then starts going down the corridor
tracking back, once it stops It does the exact same motion in
reverse.
Narrative The man Is waiting for his wife to have his kid .
Effects There is once again slow motion of the other people in the
hospital whilst they are cross dissolved/faded into the frame.
Continuity/Montage There is only around 6 shots in the entire video but the fading of
the people show ellipsis in time to show how the time is passing
as he is waiting.

7. VIDEO5-JAMES BLUNT-1973
Area Analysed Description
Location The location varies form the present streets and the streets of
1973, this is done to relate to the narrative of the song.
clothing Again leather clothing and jeans which is an occurring trend in
this genre with most bands.
Probs A disco ball is one of the main probs used to help tell the
audience the difference in time and location as they are
associated with the disco 70’s.
Cinematography A lot of close ups are used to show the lip syncing of the artist, a
lot of movements are used in the video like tilt’s up and down,
crabs as well.
Narrative The narrative of this story is that the man is telling the story of
how he and a girl called Simona.
Effects There are orange filters to show the change in time to the 70’s,
also there a cross fades to help emphasis the transformation
from present day and the past, slow motion effects are once
again featured in the video.
Continuity/Montage There is a sense of continuity but it could class as a montage as
the time changes form past and future.

8. SUMMARY
 The main trends that I have noticed in my selected genre are:
 The location is mostly related to the narrative.
 The clothing is relatively simple as most bands just wear jeans and a
hoodie or jacket, this is a style which is always been associated with indie
and rock.
 Cinematography is a key feature as the duration of shots are extremely
longer then in other genre’s and could drag if it wasn’t for the constant
use of camera movements like tracks as this helps keep the shot
interesting.
 With effects that are always used are slow -motion which was used with
every single music video no matter the genre, also filters seem to be very
well used to create emotion and mood.
