An international bank issues its Traveler credit cards worldwide. When a customer
makes a purchase using a Traveler card in a currency different from the customer’s
home currency, the bank converts the purchase price at the daily foreign exchange rate
and then charges a 4% fee on the converted cost.
Sara lives in the United States, but is on vacation in India. She used her Traveler card
for a purchase that cost 602 rupees (Indian currency). The bank posted a charge of
$9.88 to her account that included the 4% fee.
Part 1: What foreign exchange rate, in Indian rupees per one U.S. dollar, did the bank
use for Sara’s charge? Round your answer to the nearest whole number.
Part 2: A bank in India sells a prepaid credit card worth 7,500 rupees. Sara can buy the
prepaid card using dollars at the daily exchange rate with no fee, but she will lose any
money left unspent on the prepaid card. What is the least number of the 7,500 rupees on
the prepaid card Sara must spend for the prepaid card to be cheaper than charging all
her purchases on the Traveler card? Round your answer to the nearest whole number of
rupees.

Overview of the New SAT Essay
•Determine whether students can demonstrate
comprehension of a high-quality source text taken from
previously published sources.
•Determine whether students can produce cogent and clear
written analysis of text supported by critical reasoning and
evidence drawn from the source
•Determine students’ ability to use evidence, logical
reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements.
New SAT Essay Prompt
Prompt:
As you read the passage below, consider how Dana Gioia uses:
• Evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims.
• Reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence.
• Stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choice or appeals to emotion, to
add power to the ideas expressed.
Task:
Write an essay in which you explain how Dana Gioia builds an argument to
persuade his audience that the decline of reading in America will have a negative
effect on society. In your essay, analyze how Gioia uses one or more of the
features listed in the box above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the
logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the
most relevant features of the passage.
Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Gioia’s claims, but rather
explain how Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience.
• Generate an argument based on reasoning, knowledge, and
experience.
• Measures students’ ability to evaluate multiple perspectives
• Discuss a complex issue
Overview of the New ACT Essay
Read and carefully consider these perspectives. Each suggests a particular way of thinking
about the increasing presence of intelligent machines.
The 3 Perspectives
Perspective One
As machines replace humans
in the delivery of daily
services we have diminishing
human interaction. What we
lose with the increasing
intervention artificial
intelligence (AI) in our lives is
the warm human touch- an
integral part of humanity, and
with it basic courtesy, respect,
and tolerance for other
people.
Perspective Two
Humans benefit from
mechanization of low-skill and
repetitive jobs as well as of
precision jobs. In both cases
machines work better than
humans, who find themselves
increasingly redundant.
Machines are replacing
human jobs at an alarming
pace.
Perspective Three
Machines allow humans to
realize their dreams of a more
progressive world. With
increased efficiencies, human
can use their intelligence and
energies towards greater
progress and development of
the world we live in. With
mechanization there are
unimagined possibilities.
Intelligent machines
challenge humans and push
them to discover the real
potential of human
intelligence.
The Essay Task
Write a unified, coherent essay in which you evaluate the multiple perspectives on
the increasing presence of intelligent machines. In your essay, be sure to:
Analyze and evaluate the perspectives given;
• Strengths and weaknesses of the 3 given perspectives
• What insights do they offer, and what do they fail to consider?
• Why might they be persuasive to others, or why might they fail to persuade?
State and develop your own perspective on the issue;
• Explain the relationship between your perspective and those given
• Your perspective may be in full agreement with any of the others, in partial
agreement, or wholly different.
• Whatever the case, supports your ideas with logical reasoning and detailed,
persuasive examples.
• Still a competitive test
• Focus on fundamentals, concepts, and application
• Not just tricks
