TEST ON BITUMEN
1
 Penetration test
 Ductility test
 Viscosity test
 Softening point test
 Flash and fire point test
 Float test
 Solubility test
 Specific gravity test
 Spot test
 Water content
 Loss on heating test
2
PENETRATION TEST
 The penetration test determines
the hardness or softness of
bitumen.
 The instrument for measuring
the hardness of bitumen.
3
DUCTILITY TEST
 This test measure the adhesive
properly of bitu-men and it’s
ability to stretch.
 The test is conducted at 27*c and
at a rate of pull of 50mm per
minute.
 The distance up to the point of
breaking of thread is reported in
centimeters as ductility value.
4
VISCOSITY TEST
 Viscosity is defined as inverse of
fluidity.
 Viscosity is the general terms for
consistency of bitumen and it’s
measure of resistance to flow.
 High or low viscosity during
mixing or compaction has been
observed to result in lower
stability values.
5
SOFTENING POINT TEST
 The softening point of bitumen is
usually determined by ring and
ball test.
 Generally higher softening point
indicates lower temperature
suscepti-bility and is preferred in
warm cli-mates.
 The softening point of various
bitumen grades used in paving
jobs from 35* to 70* c
6
FLASH AND FIRE POINT
 Flash point:-The flash point of a
material is the lowest temperature
at which the vapour of a substance
momentarily takes fire in the from
of a flash under specified
condition of test.
 Fire point:-The fire point is the
lowest temperature at which the
material gets ignited and burns
under specified test conditions.
