Editor's Notes

  • #12 Keeping score in tennis can be very difficult for the students. Focus on the fact that, in tennis, the scoring is not 1,2,3,4… it is 15,30,40, game. Players must win by 2 so instead of going above 40, tie scores are announced as “deuce”. If a player goes 1 above deuce they are said to have “ad” or “advantage”. If you get 1 more than advantage, you have won the game. You must win SIX games to win a SET. You must win each set by 2 games. (example: Agassi wins 6 games and Roddick has won 5. Agassi must win 1 more game even though he has already won 6). A player must win 2 out of the 3 SETS to win a MATCH. Essentially, tennis players will play a minimum of 12 games in order for an entire match to be complete (6-0 games in first set, 6-0 games in second set). Think… GAMESETMATCH.
