What Is George Washington s Role In Ending The American...
On October 19th, 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis surrenders 8,000 British soldiers and
seamen to French and American forces lead by General George Washington at Yorktown,
Virginia, ending the American Revolution. In the past, Cornwallis had driven General George
Washington s Patriot forces out of New Jersey in 1776, and led his Redcoats in victory over
General Horatio Gates and the Patriots at Camden, South Carolina, in 1780. His following
invasion of North Carolina was less successful, however, and in April 1781, he led his weary and
battered troops toward the Virginia coast, where he could maintain seaborne lines of
communication with the large British army of General Henry Clinton in New York City. After

Video Game Industry Women
In particular the video game industry has been commanded by a mostly male eccentric
community, but in the past two decades, women have been encroaching on the alleged private life
of the male video gamer s community and they are petrified they are going to lose a unique time
to get away from their lives and women in general. It s a $27.5 billion industry, but the modern
video gameindustry had a humble beginning. (CNBC, 1). The video game industry was thought
up by an engineer named Ralph Baer in 1966. Moving forward over the years video gaming was
established from the ground up by male computer scientist and engineers. The first video game
released publicly was set loose upon the public at Andy Capp s Tavern in Sunnyvale, California.
The game was made by two men, one of the men was Nolan... Show more content on

In addition, Andy Capp s is now known as the Cape Canaveral of the video game industry
(CNBC, 9). Women in the video game industry are actually helping it grow and become a
stronger commerce for all of mankind. The women s journey to success in the gaming industry
was not an easy one, but for those who did make it their contributions and their prominences had
a lasting impact in the world of video games (Cohen, 1). The male gaming community is
suffering from a appeal to popular opinion, all because other people are saying women should
not be involved in the gaming industry. The first ever woman game programmer and designer
was Carol Shaw. She is best known for working with Activision but before she ever was involved
with them she became the first female to program and design a video game, 3D Tic Tac Toe for the
Atari 2600 (Cohen, 6). In addition to Shaw being the first female video game programmer we
have Dona Bailey who in 1980 became the first woman to design an arcade game. As a matter of
fact the majority of the gaming community has played this game at least one time in their lives, this
game is known as

Key Themes In Peter Carey s Exotic Pleasures
There are multiple themes that can be discussed from Peter Carey s short story, Exotic Pleasures.
The story s main characters are husband and wife whose life is in a tangle before they meet their
other companion, the bird. The couple is driving in town, torn in deciding how they will use
their remaining few dollars. They even contemplate that they will take food and champagne and
leave without paying for them. However, before they do this, the bird brings in a new kind of
fortune for Lilly. Once she strokes the bird, she feels certain kind of pleasure, which she shares
with her husband and many people afterward. The bird can provide them with extra coins, but the
story does not end with them staying happily ever after. Lilly eventually confesses to Mort that
she thinks that he is angry because a tiny bird could give her the things he could not offer. They
almost run into an accident and bitterness of the argument leads them to drive to a new place,
Kennecott, where they meet more of the similar birds. The story ends in suspense as we do not
know what Lilly and Mort do with the newly found exotic pleasures. The setting of the story
contributes to the outlining of the themes in a massive way. This essay examines ways in which the
setting relates to the themes of the story. In the story, Peter Carey suggests that capitalism is out of
control. This theme is supported by different expressions of the setting in the story. The first setting
we experience is a show of modernity

Good Place To Die
Adelaide: A Good Place to Die
How many bodies are buried in The Most Liveable City of Adelaide?
What started out as a minor scratch in the face of colonial Adelaide, soon festered and rooted
itself in the dregs of society. A certain type of people to root themselves into foundations of
Adelaide soon began to cast their shadow over the innocent. The shadow grew until it enveloped
the city and bogged the good people down in the wretched muck of the sick and evil. Wickedness
and vulgarity run rampant at biblical proportions, the worst of the worst of human kind: murderers.

Social Expectations Of Love
Love is not a concept easily defined to its fullest capacity. It has been personified, resented, and
over exaggerated throughout the history of drama and has left readers on the edge of their seats
as plots unfold. With love, there are no set guidelines or feelings that can go along with a person s
actions, but there are societal expectations that cause a couple a great deal of misery if their love
does not fit within them. Renaissance dramas often broke through these expectations to
challenge the way people viewed and thought about love. Love is portrayed as a means for
freedom, a lustful exchange, and a reward for not following social expectations in the plays The
Duchess of Malfi, Tis a Pity She s a Whore, and The Shoemaker s Holiday proving that it is an
aloof social construct with a range of meanings. In the play The Duchess of Malfi, love is a
means of keeping an acquired freedom. For the title character, the Duchess, she earned a peculiar
freedom when her first husband died. She gained his political power and essentially her own
freedom. In the beginning of the play, her brothers, the Cardinal and Ferdinand, threaten this
freedom by all but forbidding her to remarry: Marry? They are most luxurious/Will wed twice
(Webster, John. 1.1.299 300). The margins tell us that Luxurious , in this case, means lecherous,
suggesting to The Duchess that this would be her if she were to remarry. Ferdinand s insistence
the remarriage is a bad idea is for two reasons. One, he

Debunking Myths on the Treatment of African Americans in...
Invitation to Heaven
I would not attack the faith of a heathen without being sure I had a better one to put in its place.
(Harriet Beecher Stowe) Harriet Beecher Stowe is an author during the 1800 s, who was well
known for promoting the abolition of slavery. After the fugitive slave law was passed by congress
in 1850, she actively challenged slavery by writing the novel, Uncle Tom s Cabin. Uncle Tom s
cabin instantly became a bestseller in the United States. Through the novel, Stowe was able to
express her opinions and debunk many myths about how African Americans were treated as slaves.
One conception Stowe sought to inform society, was how to live a life that would qualify for an
acceptance into heaven. There were many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Claire believed every word that her minister spoke. This led her to believe in the ideology that
only Whites made it into heaven. She used the bible and the words of the minister to prove her
thoughts, as shown in the above quote. As the novel continues, life became unbearable for
Marie St. Clare. She always complained of being sick and having no one to love. Stowe creates
a plot where both Marie s husband and daughter die. This leaves Marie behind on earth to rot in
misery, while her family enters an afterlife that seems to be more beautiful. Stowe uses this plot to
prove to the reader that God does punish white people for their actions. Even though Marie St.
Clare was white, God didn t favor her and would still punish her no matter what race she was.
Stowe hoped that through this example, the reader would understand that God judged everyone
equally when it came to deciding who would be accepted into heaven.
During the time of slavery, the view that God supported white s actions was passed down and
engrained into the minds of many slaves. This allowed the institution of slavery to eliminate the
opinion that African Americans are viewed as equal to Caucasians in God s eyes. Many slaves
lost hope that they were even human beings. One character who felt this way for a long time was
George Harris. George Harris said that [White people] are members of churches, expecting to go
to heaven; and they get along so easy in the world, and have it all their own

Angels In America Play Analysis
The play made me feel several emotions. For the most part, I sympathized with the majority of
the characters. I especially felt an emotional attachment to Prior and Harper. Both of these
characters needed to be taken care of, but they were ultimately abandoned. Harper seems
confident that she will be fine on her own, but the thought of her being alone still saddens me. I
was also happy to read a play that dealt with Mormonism. I grew up as a Mormon and I am
interested when a piece of work addresses that particular form of Christianity. Mormonism is not
addressed in theatre and entertainment very often, so I found that particular element of the play
interesting. It is clear that AIDSis an important subject in Angels in America: Millennium

The history of altering geneticsgoes back to a family who had a monopoly on petroleum in the

Comparison Of Gnosticism In The Truman Show And The Da...
In modern day society, there are several ways in which the belief of Gnosticism is gradually being
circulated throughout our culture. One popular way that Gnostic concepts are being easily
dispersed is through the film industry. In widespread movies such as The Matrix, The Truman
Show and The Da Vinci Code, the presence of underlying Gnostic themes is undeniable. While each
of these movies do not encompass Gnosticismas a whole, there are certain Gnostic themes that are
strongly represented within each of the movies. For example, in The Da Vinci Code there is a
huge focus on the existence of a divine feminine principle just as the Gnostics believe in their
religion. This example shown here is the Gnostic theme that will be focused on the most throughout
this essay. By comparing the divine feminine principle within Gnostic texts with the feminine
principle in the filmThe Da Vinci Code, I will demonstrate the ways that the feminine principle in
The Da Vinci Code relates with the one from Gnosticism. However, these divine females must first

Justin Diary Entry Analysis
Cher Journal,
Today Victor left for Ingolstadt. He just left but hours ago and I already feel the vastness of my
cousin s absence. It s hard for me to see him go for I have been within his presence for as long as
I remember. It must be hard for him to go as well, especially with the recent passing of his mother,
my dear Aunt Caroline. I feel partially responsible for her death; she caught the sickness from me. I
am still so very thankful that the sickness did not take the same hold on me as it did her. This family

taken the event very hard as well. She was very close to my dearest aunt and tended to her when

Brokeback Mountain Psychology
Brokeback Mountain is a film that describes a tragedy surrounding forbidden love. The love is
between two men, Ennis and Jack and the setting is Wyoming for twenty years from the 1960 s
to the 1980 s. This was a time of conservative values that looked at homosexuality in a negative
light. These values caused Ennis and Jack to create a life that was what was expected in spite of
what they wanted. From this came a great deal of frustration and pain for the two men, their
wives, and families. The movie also related to a common issue of today s society and that is the
continued discrimination of the LGBT community. There are signs of change in modern
society, but also much needed work to be done to allow an individual to live a life with freedom
to express their sexuality. When the viewer looks at the film from a sociological perspective, the
issue of societal norms is seen and the abnormal relationship in a homosexual relationship is the
focus. When you think of the western part of the United States, the wild west comes to mind.
Settlers moving across our country during the 1800 s to start a new life and look for adventure.
With that comes the roles of the men and women who were involved in the movement. Men were
considered real men , that were in charge of their lives, law, women, and the land. These men
conquered all that was put in front of them and never backed away from what was put in front of
them. Their sexuality was seen as a dominate male who loved and

Physician-Assisted Suicide is Morally and Ethically...
The long time debate over medically assisted suicide, the presence of a doctor at a patient s
suicide, resurfaced again with the conviction of doctor Jack Kevorkian. Kevorkian was convicted of
second degree murder when he euthanized, or administered the injection himself, Thomas Youk on
September 17, 1998. Dr. Kevorkian, an advocate and practitioner of medically assisted suicides, has
many opponents on the issue. Opponents say that it is unethical and even with the consent of the
patient that the procedure is still a homicide and not suicide. I plan to show that physician assisted
suicideis morally and ethically acceptable, that court cases and laws have proven it to be acceptable,
and that it is better than other alternatives.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The moral and ethical aspects of physician assisted suicide are important ones that shouldn t be
overlooked. In virtually all cases of assisted suicide the pain and suffering experienced by the
patient is unrelievable. Although it is important to go to great lengths to try and ease the
suffering through traditional medicine, often times it s just not enough. When the traditional
approach fails sometimes more drastic approaches are necessary. One such measure that has
come to be highly controversial in this decade is physician assisted suicide. This form of suicide
is hotly debated because it isn t just a mere suicide, but a planned out social contract between two
or more people. The basis for my argument for assisted suicide rests in the values of individual
self determination or autonomy and individual well being. Self determination is central to the
issue because a person should be able to choose how to live their life or in this case, how to die.
Individual self determination is especially important in choices about the specifics of one s death
(Weir 89). Most people, no matter what the nature of their death is, are very concerned with the
last stages of their lives. This concern reflects the person s desire to retain dignity and control
during this last period of life, assisted suicide gives them that control and dignity. As far as
individual well being, most people would

The Discovery Of The Earth s Magnetic Field
The Earth s magnetic field
The discovery of the Earth s magnetic field Over 2000 years ago, the Chinese discovered that
lodestone, a naturally magnetised iron ore, would align itself in a north south direction. Hundreds
of years later, they discovered that their compasses didn t point true north and in fact that this
position changed with time. The compass was first used for navigation in the 11th 12th century,
only arriving in Europe towards the end of this period. Then, in 1600, William Gilbert (Figure 1.1)
published De Magnete, Magnetisque Corporibus, et de Magno Magnete Tellue (On the Magnet and
Magnetic Bodies, and on the Great Magnet the Earth). He concluded that the Earth itself was
magnetic with a centre of iron, and this is why a compass would point north. Figure 1.1 William
Gilbert (1544 1603) , author of De Magnete, the first printed book written by an academically
trained scholar based almost entirely on actual observation and experiment .
The structure of the Earth s Magnetic Field
The Earth s magnetic field can in fact be closely approximated by a magnetic dipole at its centre,
tilted by 11Лљ to the Earth s rotational axis, Figure 1.2. The south pole of this magnetic dipole
actually points northwards such that the north pole on a compass will point towards northwards, and
more precisely, to the Earth s magnetic north pole. The magnetic field strength decreases from the
poles towards the equator. Currently the field is 56 ВµT at the magnetic north

How Can We Deal with the Problem of Illegal Immigration Essay
How Can We Deal With The Problem Of Illegal Immigration?
Being here as an illegal immigrant is a huge problem. Tax payer s money pays for their medical
bills, the jails, and deportation back to where they came from. Our jobs and identities are being
taken away as well. Coming to the United States is seen as an advantage to get ahead in life for
most other countries. When they take advantage of breaking the system it effects the citizens more
so than it does them. There are several people who came here and worked hard to get their
citizenship the legal way. When it seems the government is letting them get away with breaking the
law it attracts more people to come here illegally.
Illegal immigration refers to the action of people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, research indicates that the majority of the illegal immigrants go to their chosen
destinations for the primarily economic and personal reasons, such as search for jobs opportunities
and family reunification. It thus implies that by understanding the reasons as to why these people
migrate illegally, the respective states may come up with executable measures to ensure that illegal
immigration is no more. The best option for solving the issue of illegal immigration in an effective
manner is by removing the incentives that draw the people into other states without following the
recommended legal procedures (Hoffmeier, 2009).
At first, the governments experiencing cases of illegal immigration need to enforce their laws of
immigration and to crack down on those employers that hire illegal aliens. The governments
should decide to make it a felony act for employing people without undergoing the proper
channels of immigration and checking the applicant s background (Gaines Kappeler, 2011). The
only way of making illegal immigrants leave the countries under which they reside illegally is by
making life difficult for them to keep on leaving there. For example, the governments should opt to

How Does Wilfred Owen Describe The Horror Of War
UNNECESSARY AND RIDICULOUS The poem Dulce et Decorum est wrote by Wilfred Owen
is a surprising poem which explains the experiences of soldiers in the trenches during World War
I. He uses his poetry as a vehicle to express his ideas on the horror of war. On this essay I will go
through of the techniques used by him to illustrate the notion of it being sweet and fitting to die
for your country is not true. The reader is introduced to the horror of war in the first lines of the
poem as Owen portrays the bad physical condition of the men, bent double, like old beggars under
sacks . This simile shows how dirty and unhealthy the soldiers appear. The comparison to old
beggars is interesting because it is how the men have been aged early by... Show more content on

Ella Fitzgerald Biography Essay
Biography Dubbed The First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz
singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy
awards and sold over 40 million albums. Her voice was flexible, wide ranging, accurate and
ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz and imitate every instrument in an orchestra.
She worked with all the jazz greats, from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Nat King Cole, to
Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman. (Or rather, some might say all the jazz
greats had the pleasure of working with Ella.) She performed at top venues all over the world,
and packed them to the hilt. Her audiences were as diverse as her vocal range. They were rich and...

After getting into trouble with the police, she was taken into custody and sent to a reform

caretakers. Eventually Ella escaped from the reformatory. The 15 year old found herself broke

Analysis Of Donatello s Equestrian Monument Of Erasmo Da...
It is intriguing to notice throughout art history the relationship between the artist and the patron.
Many famous and outstanding works of art only exist because of the wealthy patron behind the
work. From early renaissance sculpture to baroque style painting, patrons become increasingly
interested in commissioning art as a way of exhibiting their great power and influence whilst
maintaining an image of poise and regality. Donatello s Equestrian Monument of Erasmo da Narni,
(Gattamelata), (1443 1453) is a bronze sculpture made to commemorate the military
accomplishments during Gattamelata s lifetime. Although the sculpture was constructed after his
death, Donatello represents the general as youthful and stern. Anthony van Dyck s painting, Charles
I at the Hunt, 1635, conveys a similar interest in focusing on all the positive aspects of the patron,

The horse and Erasmo both are rendered with precision, flow, and with an accurate anatomical
representation. Detail is apparent in the muscular bodies which keeps a natural connection
between the horse and his rider. Although the subject rises above us, his disposition stays true to
life. Donatello chose to show a youthful Erasmo in his prime and hardened from battle. This
further establishes himself as a confident leader. He holds a baton diagonally in his right hand
giving the statue forward momentum. He presses onward even in death. The bronze statute sits on
a plain marble base that is arranged upon a limestone pedestal which includes the relief sculpture
of the angels and battle armour. The entire work is approximately 3.71 meters high (Stokstad, 631)
with the base and statue in a slightly deteriorated condition in present day. Donatello achieved his
intense facial features by using the lost wax method. By having individual emotions for each
figure, it builds upon the overall impressive feel to the whole

Piaget s Developmental Stages Essay
Piaget s developmental stages are ways of normal intellectual development. There are four different
stages. The stages start at infant age and work all the way up to adulthood. The stages include
things like judgment, thought, and knowledge of infants, children, teens, and adults. These four
stages were names after Jean Piageta developmental biologist and psychologist. Piaget recorded
intellectual abilities and developments of infants, children, and teens. The four different stages of

I handed my infant niece, Harper, a set of keys, thinking she would shake them and giggle at the
noise they made. I thought this because in Piaget s developmental stage, sensorimotor, it states that
infants learn from experimenting and their main focus is what is happening in that very moment.
My prediction was correct. As soon as I held the keys in front of her she began to reach for them.
Then once I handed the keys to her, she rattled them making a clanging noise.
The preoperational stage is when infants become older, young children and they are able to think
in a more symbolic way. In this stage children start to learn the difference between real and make
believe, past and future. They tend to have more of an imagination as they grow older. Children in
the preoperational stage still are not completely logical with their thinking. They go more off
intuition. Do more of what they want to do, not what is the best thing to do. They are still too
young to grasp the concept of cause and effect. They also do not understand time and comparison
yet.
My niece, Arianna, plays house and has baby dolls. She pretends like she is a mother to her baby
dolls. Even though this is make believe she is playing the role of a mother to her baby doll. This
connects to Piaget s developmental stage of preoperational because her thinking is not completely
logical, but she knows that the baby is not actually real. I think that this is how most little

Determine the critical path. The critical path is determined by adding the times for the activities in
each sequence and determining the longest path in the project. The critical path determines the total
calendar time required for the project. If activities outside the critical path speed up oe slow down
(within limits), the total project time does not change. The amount of time that a non critical path
activity can be delayed without the project is referred to as a slack time. If the critical path is not
immediately obvious, it may be helpful to determine the following four quantities foe each activity:
ES Earliest Start time EF Earliest Finish time LS Latest Start time LF Latest Finish time These
times are calculated using the expected time for the relevant activities. The earliest start and finish
times of each activity are determined by working forward through the network and determining the
earliest time at which an activity can start and finish considering its predecessors activities. The
latest start and finish times are the latest times that an activity can start and finish without delaying
the project. LS and LF are found by working backward through the network. The difference in the
latest and earliest finish of each activity is that activity s slack. The critical path then is the path
through the network in which none of the activities have slack. The variance in the project
completion time can be calculated by

UFOs: Are They Real?
UFOs have been one of the greatest mysteries of all times. From the beginning of time humans
have seen UFOs. The real mystery is whether or not a UFO is a ship from another planet. There
have been numerous reports of flying saucers. Many of them have been able to be explained and
some were even elaborate hoaxes. But still, there are a few out there that are unexplainable and
could quiet possibly be visitors from somewhere else in the universe. Even the government has
admitted after long studies that some of the reported cases seem to lean towards extraterrestrials.

holes in the ground in a perfect equilateral triangle and in the middle was a piece of scorched
earth. There was also a line on all the nearby trees about 4 feet off the ground (Kettelkamp 19).
The scientists used a Geiger counter and found extremely high radiation readings from the site. The
next night the object appeared again in a nearby field. When investigated the site was similar to the
one from the previous night. The official report stated that the object that showed up on the radar
and was later seen in Rendlesham Forest could not be identified (Kettelkamp 24).
Sightings of UFOs have not been limited to just on Earth. There have also been many sightings
by astronauts in space. Gemini 7 photographed what appeared to be two flying saucers. Apollo 8
may have photographed what was a giant spaceship near the moon. On their next orbit the object
had disappeared. Apollo 11 may have also spotted a UFO near the moon. Possibly the most
famous and mysterious sighting is the picture taken by the Viking satellite. The photo shows what
looks to be a giant face on Mars. The face looks remarkably similar to the face on the Sphinx in
Egypt. Some believe it could be a giant monument from an alien race that once lived on Mars
(Kettelkamp 7). Photographic analysis could not identify any of the reported objects.

Chivalry Bias/Sentencing differences between male and female offenders

This as a result has led to industrialised countries experimenting ill designed development concepts

unconditional loans to nations in economic crisis so as to achieve their developmental needs

legislatures, also known as the Washington Consensus which as a result led the IMF and World

number of students that were present that day were 27 students. I videotaped two out of the three

The video I chose is from the first minutes of the first lessonincluding the hookand it goes into the
moment that students start carrying out their own investigations through the construction and the
creation of their own clay boats. Even before I asked the hook, the students were raising their
hands, which is common for them to do. What I feel I should have done was asked them to put their

Machiavelli And Humanism
While the moral codes of Humanism and Catholicism consider being deceitful to be wrong, from
an amoral perspective, betrayal is unavoidable and comes with its own set of benefits. This is
Machiavelli s view in his 1513 work The Prince, in which he details the complexities of gaining
and maintaining political power to his Italian statesman Lorenzo de Medici, from whom he hopes
to regain a political position after shifts in the unstable Florentine republic. Machiavelli argues that
people, particularly political leaders, should have flexible moral codes so that they can bend them
when necessary. For him, betraying allies or betraying one s own beliefs is acceptable, even

Despite Machiavelli s tongue in cheek perspective, his intentions in writing The Prince exemplify
the two faced nature of mankind. During political upset in Florence, the ruling family betrays
Machiavelli himself by temporarily jailing him for treason, stripping him of his political
position, and banishing him. Yet unlike Dante, who is more personally affected by his exile,
Machiavelli sees Medici family s return to power as an opportunity to regain his own position,
which is why he hopes to impress Lorenzo with The Prince. For him, betrayal is more expected
under the circumstances, and so he hopes to play them at their own game. By feigning loyalty
and kissing up to Lorenzo, Machiavelli improves his chances of obtaining power, even though he
likely doesn t believe everything he s saying. For him, his true intentions or beliefs don t matter
like with religion and betrayal, his deceitfulness is a useful political tool in a world of deceitful
men. With the sixteenth century Florentine power struggle and religious tension, it was difficult for

Because the loan is secured by the property, you will get the lowest possible interest rates on loans.
This loan is the best way to get large amounts of money. But in unsecured loans, there is a high
risk of losing your assets provided as collateral, if you fail to make repayments on time. On the
other hand, unsecured gives you a way to get funds without possessions or property. The interest
rate on unsecured loans is slightly higher in comparison but you are free from the fear of losing

The kids do not stop here; Jack is constantly having kids tortured. This shows how far away they

Contribution Of Winston Churchill
INTRODUCTION
Sir Winston Churchill was born in 1874, and is the son of English politician Lord Randolph
Churchill and American socialite Lady Randolph Spencer Churchill. He was a British politician
who served in the British Army, as a member of Parliament, and as the Prime Minister of the
United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and 1951 to 1955. From 1940 to 1955, he was the leader of
the Conservative Party in Britain. In 1953, he received a Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II and
the Nobel Prize for Literature.
While Winston Churchill is most known for his leadership of Britain during the Second World War
and his prominent role in the defeat of Nazi Germany and the Axis Powers, he is equally
responsible for the brutalization of numerous foreign nations and cultures, the unwarranted deaths
of three million Indians due to a famine that he purposefully worsened, and the oversight of
unprovoked attacks on Greek civilian protesters.
Churchill was known for arming troops who previously had collaborative ties to Nazis, under the
guise of national leverage . When communist friendly forces in Greece became more powerful
than he originally anticipated, Churchill aligned Britain s forces with pro Nazi forces, thereby
switching alliances, and either killing or injuring hundreds of people in a 1944 unarmed protest in
Athens, Greece. Churchill even considered swapping sides and fighting on the side of Nazi
Germany at the end of World War II since he began to hate the Soviets more than

picks up some crack and whatever other drugs he can get his hands on. His addiction is so bad,
he often blacks out (sometimes for months), and wakes up in another state or country. Lip seems
to be following in Frank s footsteps, especially after his relationship with his professor ends. His
drinking habits get him kicked out of school, and lands him in rehab. After he gets out, he keeps
his drinking habits under control, but eventually starts to spiral out of control when life gets tough.

A Journey of Valuable Lesson in Niccolo Ammaniti s I m...
The novel, I m Not Scared, by Niccolo Ammaniti takes you on a memorable journey with
Michele Amitrano, a nine year old boy, who learns valuable lessons on how trust and loyalty
gives you more than greed and money oriented acts. The journey arises in 1978 in Aqua Traverse
during the time when the small, isolated town of Southern Italy suffered from a major heat wave.
Around this time is when Michele makes a tragic discovery of a young, kidnapped Filippo who is
chained up in a hole and made to live in the most inhumane conditions. Through the finding of
Filippo Michele s innocence becomes a thing of the past as it uncovers the truth about the real
monsters in Aqua Traverse. Although, Michele never loses sight of his strong belief in the values
of trust and loyalty even with his regretful selling out of Filippo to Salvatore Scardiccione and Pino
s (Papa s) to deter him from knowing the truth but then his materialistic ways of winning him back
after the truth is discovered.
Michele s first experience with the acts of betrayal is when he discovers the villager s involvement
in the kidnapping of Filippo. From this he realizes the value of trust and loyalty is far more
important than money. Prior to his discovery of the kidnapping, Michele admired and looked up to
all the adults in Aqua Traverse, especially his parents, Pino and Teresa. Throughout the novel we
see Michele s views and opinions of his father change dramatically with hints Ammaniti provides.

How Did The American Revolution Affect France

Seven Years War was a war that involved France and Britain, in which Britain defeated France
leaving them in an economic crisis. In addition, France continued to participate in the American
Revolution, in order to get revenge on Britain, this conclusively backfired, as it brought liberal ideas
to France and also pushed them further into their economic catastrophe. Ultimately, the Seven Years
War and the American Revolution led France to a position of being susceptible to revolution, due to
their plundering economic status and the new ideals brought forward. The Enlightenment also
altered France s way of thinking, as it introduced revolutionary beliefs. Socially, Enlightenment
ideas heavily impacted the French Revolution in the sense that views of liberty reflected in
Montesquieu s The Spirit of the Laws as well as beliefs pertaining to revolution, mentioned in John
Locke s Two Treaties of Government can be directly linked to the Third Estate s desire to be
represented in an equal manner and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.
Religiously, Enlightenment ideas weren t as impactful as social ideas. Although, the concept of
rationalism was a major cause for the Catholic Church s property to be nationalized and sold with
hopes of financing the state. In addition, the National Assembly granted Jews and French
Protestants the right to practice their religion, which corresponds with the Enlightenment idea of
religious toleration. The social ideas of the Enlightenment heavily impacted policies of the French
Revolution through the concepts of liberty and revolution, whereas religious ideas can be observed

AP Classes Advantages And Disadvantages
High school is a very hectic time in a teenager s life. There are multiple different things going on,
such as classes to choose, who to be friends with, deciding on colleges and careers, and much
more. There are many classes to choose from. Once classes have been chosen, it is now time to
pick what level is most beneficial: regular, honors, or Advanced Placement. But be warned,
Advanced Placement classes do not benefit US students because they are too rushed and the
students are not prepared to take them. It is understood that many parents believe that AP
classes can improve their GPA, prepare them for college, and teach them many important skills;
such as leadership, determination, and critical thinking. Taking an AP class, even one, can
change a student s GPA. The common misconception is that the courses being taken can improve
a one s GPA. It is indeed true that doing well in an AP course can drastically improve a student s
GPA. The amount of points awarded for having a high grade in the class is much higher than the
amount of points for taking the same class at a regular level. An A in a regular class is worth
four points, but an A in an AP class is worth 4.08 points. Those .08 points can add up quickly if a
student is taking more than one AP course. While doing well in an AP course is rewarded
handsomely, doing poorly in an AP course can have a negative impact on a student s GPA. As
stated above, the .08 that comes with the course can add up, what with multiple classes

Synergistic Effect On Barbiturates
Question 2 The most toxic substance tested was the combination of diazepam and secobarbital
sodium with a 96 hour LD50 value of 6.31mg/kg/d when compared to the least toxic substance
diazepam with its 96 hour LD50 value of 794.32mg/kg/d. This synergistic effect is due to both
barbiturates such as secobarbital sodium and diazepam a benzodiazepine, both are an allosteric
activator of Оі aminobutyric acid (GABA) and specifically the GABA A receptor. For diazepam
binding is localised between the Оі and О± subunits. However, GABA A receptors also contain
alternative allosteric modulatory sites for the binding of secobarbital sodium, however the precise
location is yet to be determined. Although, the α subunit is believed to play a role (Löscher

These are ligand gated chloride selective ion channels that become activated by GABA. The
binding of the previously stated substances increases the binding of GABA, this has the effect of
increasing the total transport of chloride ions across the cell membrane of the neuron. The
increase in chloride ions within the neuron, hyperpolarizing the membrane potential. Therefore,
the difference in resting potential and threshold potential is increased, this causes firing to be less
likely. This decreases the chances of firing within the neurons. Causing the desired outcomes,
such as initiate sleep and a calming effect (Tan et al., 2011). Diazepam can cause such outcomes
in two ways, the first by increasing the binding ability of GABA to activate the receptor and the
second by increasing the chance of chloride channel opening as a response to GABA binding.
Secobarbital sodium is similar due to producing the same effects as diazepam at lower
concentrations but when the concentration rises. Secobarbital sodium directly activates the GABA
receptor. This suggests two binding sites which are specific to barbiturates. This explains the
higher 96 hour LD50 values compared to diazepam (Makkar et

Most Youtubers have a schedule on when they post videos, like they try to post on tuesday and
friday every week. Everyone has their own schedule, I mean some post every weekday while
others post about once a month. So having a concrete agenda for your subscribers to follow is a
great plan. Staying true to that schedule and planning it all out is a great control mechanism to
use as a YouTuber. This could entail setting reminders every once in awhile to make sure you
don t forget to record that weeks video. Or you could take a day to plan out video ideas for the
whole month and when you will post them. This mechanism is important to being a successful
YouTuber because having those daily videos all planned out will assure you of a daily paycheck.
It will also show your subscribers that you are dedicated to the channel and their needs. Plus it
might lead you to a good reputation because you will seem as a very organized individual in
having a timely schedule.
There are websites on the internet that can help you observe everything about your subscriber

Ethics, Law Ethics And Ethics
When I hear the word ethics, the first thing that comes to my mind is the moral code, standards
or values on how we should act as person, these are the rules by which we make decisions
between right and wrong or good and bad. Therefore, we based on these rules to make
judgments. If a person doesn t follow those moral standards or values we automatically think that
person is a bad person or vice versa. We find ethical standards in everywhere we go. There are
Medical ethics, Law ethics, Business ethics and many more but I want to focus right now on
Business Ethics. It is important that every business has a moral code to follow. This will help not

By using this ethical procedure that I am going to describe later it will allow your company to
achieve all its organizational goals while protecting and staying honest to not only its employees
but to its customers. In fact, this will allow the company to make sure if it s personal and
organizational objectives are line up.
Every business should have some unique features that constitute its aims. There are some features
that I think every company should have...
1.Good business skills: By this, I mean that shareholders, board of directors, CEOs, managers in
the company should have experience and knowledge on how to run a business. Not every person
can run a business. They should know what they are doing; they should know how to make smart
decisions that will benefit the business.
2.Social Responsibility: By this, I mean that every business should not only focus on making profits
but on how to help society. Although making money is the motivation that keeps a company going
but it is essential that the organization value also the society and the people that help the company
keep going.
3.Human Satisfaction: By this, I mean that every business should find ways on how to satisfy their
clients, employees, suppliers, etc. because a happy client is a happy business. If a client/supplier
/employee is not happy with the service provided, keep in mind that he/she is not going to return to

Mrs. Linde as a Foil for Nora in A Doll s House
Random House Webster s dictionary defines a foil as a person or thing that makes another seem
better by contrast. This essay will focus on the use of the foil to contrast another character. The
characters of Nora and Mrs. Linde provide an excellent example of this literary device. Mrs. Linde s
aged, experienced personality is the perfect foil for Nora s childish nature. Mrs. Linde s hard life
is used to contrast the frivolity and sheltered aspects of Nora s life. Nora s optimism and belief in
things improbable is an opposite to the rationality and down to earth mentality of Mrs. Linde.
Finally, the rekindling of the flame between Mrs. Linde and Krogstad is a direct contrast to the ...

Nora: Oh, please, Torvald darling, do that! I beg you, please. Then I could hang the bills in pretty

Mrs. Linde is the perfect foil for Nora as can be evidenced with the following excerpt from lines
297 301. Mrs. Linde s self sacrifice for her closest loved ones is atypical of those without the
utmost maturity. Mrs. Linde married a man she did not love for the purpose of security:
Nora: ...is it really true that you weren t in love with your husband? Why did you marry him then?
Mrs. Linde: My mother was still alive, but bedridden and helpless and I had my two younger
brothers to look after. In all conscience, I didn t think I could turn him down.
Evidence of Mrs. Linde s hard life can be seen in the conversation occurring between herself and
Doctor Rank, a friend of the Helmer s. In contrast to Nora s life of little trouble and frivolity, Mrs.
Linde has worn herself out, both mentally and physically:
Mrs. Linde: Yes, I take the stairs very slowly. They re rather hard on me.
Dr. Rank: Uh hm, some touch of internal weakness?
Mrs. Linde: More overexertion, I d say.

Islam Project, Shah, The Empire Of The Safavid Empire

C C Period 6
Islam Project, Shah Ismail of the Safavid Empire
Ismail I lived during a turbulent time in Iran s history. It was a period of political fragmentation
and decentralization [Richard C. Martin]. He was the founder of the Safavid Empire. In 1501, he
named himself the Shah, king, of the empire and proclaimed Twelver religion the official religion
of state. It took him almost over a decade to consolidate his control over all of Iran, where most of
the Persian population still practiced as Sunni. His Qizilbash military was given the task to convert
anyone on Safavid territory to Twelver Islamand the army succeeded. Ismail was a remarkable
leader when he set his mind to it, yet the Ottoman empire instigated a war against the Safavid
empire because of the increase of Shia population. Ismail was caught by surprise and the
Qizilbash were defeated. The aftermath of the battle was severe; Ismail was so embarrassed by
the defeat he became inattentive to any Qizilbash work and military affairs of state. He broke
down and started to write poems about pious Muslims and how they worship their god. The shah
died at age 36, after becoming an alcoholic, but the Safavid empire continued for over 200 years
after. The Safavid Empire was founded on the unified front of their population, their military
strength and intolerance for other beliefs but their own. Great military strength and the ability to
conquest many empires was not a very common attribute many kings had

There are many mysteries about the smallpox virus. Since the seventeenth century, doctors have
understood that if the pustules merge into sheets across the body the victim will usually die: the
virus has split the whole skin. If the victim survives, the pustules turn into scabs and fall off,
leaving scars. This is known as ordinary smallpox.
Some people develop extreme smallpox, which is loosely called black pox. Doctors separate
black pox into two forms flat smallpox and hemorrhagic smallpox. In a case of flat smallpox, the
skin remains smooth and doesn t pustulate, but it darkens until it looks charred, and it can slip off
the body in sheets. In hemorrhagic smallpox, black, unclotted blood oozes or runs from the mouth
and other body orifices. Black pox is close to a hundred per cent fatal. If any sign of it appears in
the body, the victim will almost certainly die. In the bloody cases, the virus destroys the linings of
the throat, the stomach, the intestines, the rectum, and the vagina, and these membranes
disintegrate. Fatal smallpox can destroy the body s entire skin both the exterior skin and the interior
skin that lines the passages of the body.
Smallpox virus s scientific name is variola. It means spotted in Latin, and it was given to the
disease by a medieval bishop. The virus, as a life form, comes in two subspecies:

Essay on Ivan the Terrible
Ivan the Terrible
I m doing my report on Ivan the Terrible. Ivan Vasiljevich the Terrible was born in 1530 and died
in 1584. He was the son of the Grand Duke Vasili III. His mother Helena Glinsky was the
daughter of a Luthuanian refugee who had found asylum in Russia. She was young, vivacious,
intelligent, and beautiful. Vasili had married her after he tried to have an heir for 20 years with his
first wife Salome.
Vasili was in his 50 s, and Helenawas 20 when Ivan was born. Ivan had another brother Yuri born
18 months later.
The day of Ivans birth, August 25, 1530, was a joyful one. The Grand Duke ordered prison doors

Ivan and his boyhood friends would ride their horses full speed down the streets of Moscow. Some
citizens who were lucky escaped with no more than a scare, others were trampled beneath the horse
s hooves. Fighting with his friends was common.
Kicking, punching and biting, who ever won the struggle for power won, who ever lost was
sometimes beat to near death.
As Ivan grew older, he began to under stand the benefits of being a prince Czar. Because Ivan
grew up the way he did was why he became the ruler that he did. He knew from experience what
would happen if he wasn t a strong ruler. As a Czar, when Ivan met someone new, he would look
for the thing to fear in that person, then, he would do whatever it took to minimize whatever that
something was that he was afraid of. It might require taking harsh action, but then Ivan wouldn t
have to worry about that person becoming too powerful.
Along with the early influences of the boyars, also came the influence of ideas gained from the
books that Ivan read. He read everything that he could get his hands on. Although there wasn t
much to read, he read it, including the Bible, religious books, and some of the Western books that
had been brought in from the Byzantine Empire.
Ivan planned his own Czar coronation to the smallest detail, even though he was only 16 years
old.. Everything had to be perfect for the future. He was crowned in 1547 and married a month later.

  • 2. What Is George Washington s Role In Ending The American... On October 19th, 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis surrenders 8,000 British soldiers and seamen to French and American forces lead by General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, ending the American Revolution. In the past, Cornwallis had driven General George Washington s Patriot forces out of New Jersey in 1776, and led his Redcoats in victory over General Horatio Gates and the Patriots at Camden, South Carolina, in 1780. His following invasion of North Carolina was less successful, however, and in April 1781, he led his weary and battered troops toward the Virginia coast, where he could maintain seaborne lines of communication with the large British army of General Henry Clinton in New York City. After conducting a series of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Video Game Industry Women In particular the video game industry has been commanded by a mostly male eccentric community, but in the past two decades, women have been encroaching on the alleged private life of the male video gamer s community and they are petrified they are going to lose a unique time to get away from their lives and women in general. It s a $27.5 billion industry, but the modern video gameindustry had a humble beginning. (CNBC, 1). The video game industry was thought up by an engineer named Ralph Baer in 1966. Moving forward over the years video gaming was established from the ground up by male computer scientist and engineers. The first video game released publicly was set loose upon the public at Andy Capp s Tavern in Sunnyvale, California. The game was made by two men, one of the men was Nolan... Women in the video game industry are actually helping it grow and become a stronger commerce for all of mankind. The women s journey to success in the gaming industry was not an easy one, but for those who did make it their contributions and their prominences had a lasting impact in the world of video games (Cohen, 1). The male gaming community is suffering from a appeal to popular opinion, all because other people are saying women should not be involved in the gaming industry. The first ever woman game programmer and designer was Carol Shaw. She is best known for working with Activision but before she ever was involved with them she became the first female to program and design a video game, 3D Tic Tac Toe for the Atari 2600 (Cohen, 6). In addition to Shaw being the first female video game programmer we have Dona Bailey who in 1980 became the first woman to design an arcade game. As a matter of fact the majority of the gaming community has played this game at least one time in their lives, this game is known as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Key Themes In Peter Carey s Exotic Pleasures There are multiple themes that can be discussed from Peter Carey s short story, Exotic Pleasures. The story s main characters are husband and wife whose life is in a tangle before they meet their other companion, the bird. The couple is driving in town, torn in deciding how they will use their remaining few dollars. They even contemplate that they will take food and champagne and leave without paying for them. However, before they do this, the bird brings in a new kind of fortune for Lilly. Once she strokes the bird, she feels certain kind of pleasure, which she shares with her husband and many people afterward. The bird can provide them with extra coins, but the story does not end with them staying happily ever after. Lilly eventually confesses to Mort that she thinks that he is angry because a tiny bird could give her the things he could not offer. They almost run into an accident and bitterness of the argument leads them to drive to a new place, Kennecott, where they meet more of the similar birds. The story ends in suspense as we do not know what Lilly and Mort do with the newly found exotic pleasures. The setting of the story contributes to the outlining of the themes in a massive way. This essay examines ways in which the setting relates to the themes of the story. In the story, Peter Carey suggests that capitalism is out of control. This theme is supported by different expressions of the setting in the story. The first setting we experience is a show of modernity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What started out as a minor scratch in the face of colonial Adelaide, soon festered and rooted itself in the dregs of society. A certain type of people to root themselves into foundations of Adelaide soon began to cast their shadow over the innocent. The shadow grew until it enveloped the city and bogged the good people down in the wretched muck of the sick and evil. • 6. Social Expectations Of Love Love is not a concept easily defined to its fullest capacity. It has been personified, resented, and over exaggerated throughout the history of drama and has left readers on the edge of their seats as plots unfold. With love, there are no set guidelines or feelings that can go along with a person s actions, but there are societal expectations that cause a couple a great deal of misery if their love does not fit within them. Renaissance dramas often broke through these expectations to challenge the way people viewed and thought about love. Love is portrayed as a means for freedom, a lustful exchange, and a reward for not following social expectations in the plays The Duchess of Malfi, Tis a Pity She s a Whore, and The Shoemaker s Holiday proving that it is an aloof social construct with a range of meanings. In the play The Duchess of Malfi, love is a means of keeping an acquired freedom. For the title character, the Duchess, she earned a peculiar freedom when her first husband died. She gained his political power and essentially her own freedom. In the beginning of the play, her brothers, the Cardinal and Ferdinand, threaten this freedom by all but forbidding her to remarry: Marry? They are most luxurious/Will wed twice (Webster, John. 1.1.299 300). The margins tell us that Luxurious , in this case, means lecherous, suggesting to The Duchess that this would be her if she were to remarry. Ferdinand s insistence the remarriage is a bad idea is for two reasons. One, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Debunking Myths on the Treatment of African Americans in... Invitation to Heaven I would not attack the faith of a heathen without being sure I had a better one to put in its place. (Harriet Beecher Stowe) Harriet Beecher Stowe is an author during the 1800 s, who was well known for promoting the abolition of slavery. After the fugitive slave law was passed by congress in 1850, she actively challenged slavery by writing the novel, Uncle Tom s Cabin. Uncle Tom s cabin instantly became a bestseller in the United States. Through the novel, Stowe was able to express her opinions and debunk many myths about how African Americans were treated as slaves. One conception Stowe sought to inform society, was how to live a life that would qualify for an acceptance into heaven. There were many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Claire believed every word that her minister spoke. This led her to believe in the ideology that only Whites made it into heaven. She used the bible and the words of the minister to prove her thoughts, as shown in the above quote. As the novel continues, life became unbearable for Marie St. Clare. She always complained of being sick and having no one to love. Stowe creates a plot where both Marie s husband and daughter die. This leaves Marie behind on earth to rot in misery, while her family enters an afterlife that seems to be more beautiful. Stowe uses this plot to prove to the reader that God does punish white people for their actions. Even though Marie St. Clare was white, God didn t favor her and would still punish her no matter what race she was. Stowe hoped that through this example, the reader would understand that God judged everyone equally when it came to deciding who would be accepted into heaven. During the time of slavery, the view that God supported white s actions was passed down and engrained into the minds of many slaves. This allowed the institution of slavery to eliminate the opinion that African Americans are viewed as equal to Caucasians in God s eyes. Many slaves lost hope that they were even human beings. One character who felt this way for a long time was George Harris. George Harris said that [White people] are members of churches, expecting to go to heaven; and they get along so easy in the world, and have it all their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I especially felt an emotional attachment to Prior and Harper. Both of these characters needed to be taken care of, but they were ultimately abandoned. Harper seems confident that she will be fine on her own, but the thought of her being alone still saddens me. I was also happy to read a play that dealt with Mormonism. I grew up as a Mormon and I am interested when a piece of work addresses that particular form of Christianity. Mormonism is not addressed in theatre and entertainment very often, so I found that particular element of the play interesting. • 12. Comparison Of Gnosticism In The Truman Show And The Da... In modern day society, there are several ways in which the belief of Gnosticism is gradually being circulated throughout our culture. One popular way that Gnostic concepts are being easily dispersed is through the film industry. In widespread movies such as The Matrix, The Truman Show and The Da Vinci Code, the presence of underlying Gnostic themes is undeniable. While each of these movies do not encompass Gnosticismas a whole, there are certain Gnostic themes that are strongly represented within each of the movies. For example, in The Da Vinci Code there is a huge focus on the existence of a divine feminine principle just as the Gnostics believe in their religion. This example shown here is the Gnostic theme that will be focused on the most throughout this essay. By comparing the divine feminine principle within Gnostic texts with the feminine principle in the filmThe Da Vinci Code, I will demonstrate the ways that the feminine principle in The Da Vinci Code relates with the one from Gnosticism. It s hard for me to see him go for I have been within his presence for as long as I remember. It must be hard for him to go as well, especially with the recent passing of his mother, my dear Aunt Caroline. I feel partially responsible for her death; she caught the sickness from me. The love is between two men, Ennis and Jack and the setting is Wyoming for twenty years from the 1960 s to the 1980 s. This was a time of conservative values that looked at homosexuality in a negative light. These values caused Ennis and Jack to create a life that was what was expected in spite of what they wanted. From this came a great deal of frustration and pain for the two men, their wives, and families. The movie also related to a common issue of today s society and that is the continued discrimination of the LGBT community. There are signs of change in modern society, but also much needed work to be done to allow an individual to live a life with freedom to express their sexuality. When the viewer looks at the film from a sociological perspective, the issue of societal norms is seen and the abnormal relationship in a homosexual relationship is the focus. When you think of the western part of the United States, the wild west comes to mind. Settlers moving across our country during the 1800 s to start a new life and look for adventure. With that comes the roles of the men and women who were involved in the movement. Men were considered real men , that were in charge of their lives, law, women, and the land. • 16. Physician-Assisted Suicide is Morally and Ethically... The long time debate over medically assisted suicide, the presence of a doctor at a patient s suicide, resurfaced again with the conviction of doctor Jack Kevorkian. Kevorkian was convicted of second degree murder when he euthanized, or administered the injection himself, Thomas Youk on September 17, 1998. Dr. Kevorkian, an advocate and practitioner of medically assisted suicides, has many opponents on the issue. Opponents say that it is unethical and even with the consent of the patient that the procedure is still a homicide and not suicide. I plan to show that physician assisted suicideis morally and ethically acceptable, that court cases and laws have proven it to be acceptable, and that it is better than other alternatives.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The moral and ethical aspects of physician assisted suicide are important ones that shouldn t be overlooked. In virtually all cases of assisted suicide the pain and suffering experienced by the patient is unrelievable. Although it is important to go to great lengths to try and ease the suffering through traditional medicine, often times it s just not enough. When the traditional approach fails sometimes more drastic approaches are necessary. One such measure that has come to be highly controversial in this decade is physician assisted suicide. This form of suicide is hotly debated because it isn t just a mere suicide, but a planned out social contract between two or more people. The basis for my argument for assisted suicide rests in the values of individual self determination or autonomy and individual well being. Self determination is central to the issue because a person should be able to choose how to live their life or in this case, how to die. Individual self determination is especially important in choices about the specifics of one s death (Weir 89). Most people, no matter what the nature of their death is, are very concerned with the last stages of their lives. This concern reflects the person s desire to retain dignity and control during this last period of life, assisted suicide gives them that control and dignity. As far as individual well being, most people would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. The Discovery Of The Earth s Magnetic Field The Earth s magnetic field The discovery of the Earth s magnetic field Over 2000 years ago, the Chinese discovered that lodestone, a naturally magnetised iron ore, would align itself in a north south direction. Hundreds of years later, they discovered that their compasses didn t point true north and in fact that this position changed with time. The compass was first used for navigation in the 11th 12th century, only arriving in Europe towards the end of this period. Then, in 1600, William Gilbert (Figure 1.1) published De Magnete, Magnetisque Corporibus, et de Magno Magnete Tellue (On the Magnet and Magnetic Bodies, and on the Great Magnet the Earth). He concluded that the Earth itself was magnetic with a centre of iron, and this is why a compass would point north. Figure 1.1 William Gilbert (1544 1603) , author of De Magnete, the first printed book written by an academically trained scholar based almost entirely on actual observation and experiment . The structure of the Earth s Magnetic Field The Earth s magnetic field can in fact be closely approximated by a magnetic dipole at its centre, tilted by 11Лљ to the Earth s rotational axis, Figure 1.2. The south pole of this magnetic dipole actually points northwards such that the north pole on a compass will point towards northwards, and more precisely, to the Earth s magnetic north pole. Coming to the United States is seen as an advantage to get ahead in life for most other countries. When they take advantage of breaking the system it effects the citizens more so than it does them. However, research indicates that the majority of the illegal immigrants go to their chosen destinations for the primarily economic and personal reasons, such as search for jobs opportunities and family reunification. It thus implies that by understanding the reasons as to why these people migrate illegally, the respective states may come up with executable measures to ensure that illegal immigration is no more. The best option for solving the issue of illegal immigration in an effective manner is by removing the incentives that draw the people into other states without following the recommended legal procedures (Hoffmeier, 2009). At first, the governments experiencing cases of illegal immigration need to enforce their laws of immigration and to crack down on those employers that hire illegal aliens. The governments should decide to make it a felony act for employing people without undergoing the proper channels of immigration and checking the applicant s background (Gaines Kappeler, 2011). The only way of making illegal immigrants leave the countries under which they reside illegally is by making life difficult for them to keep on leaving there. For example, the governments should opt to ignore granting driver s licenses, public schooling opportunities, food stamps and permanent employment to the people that reside in the states illegally. I handed my infant niece, Harper, a set of keys, thinking she would shake them and giggle at the noise they made. My prediction was correct. As soon as I held the keys in front of her she began to reach for them. Then once I handed the keys to her, she rattled them making a clanging noise. The preoperational stage is when infants become older, young children and they are able to think in a more symbolic way. In this stage children start to learn the difference between real and make believe, past and future. They tend to have more of an imagination as they grow older. Children in the preoperational stage still are not completely logical with their thinking. They go more off intuition. Do more of what they want to do, not what is the best thing to do. This is Machiavelli s view in his 1513 work The Prince, in which he details the complexities of gaining and maintaining political power to his Italian statesman Lorenzo de Medici, from whom he hopes to regain a political position after shifts in the unstable Florentine republic. Machiavelli argues that people, particularly political leaders, should have flexible moral codes so that they can bend them when necessary. For him, betraying allies or betraying one s own beliefs is acceptable, even beneficial, because it aids in making tough political decisions to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite Machiavelli s tongue in cheek perspective, his intentions in writing The Prince exemplify the two faced nature of mankind. During political upset in Florence, the ruling family betrays Machiavelli himself by temporarily jailing him for treason, stripping him of his political position, and banishing him. Yet unlike Dante, who is more personally affected by his exile, Machiavelli sees Medici family s return to power as an opportunity to regain his own position, which is why he hopes to impress Lorenzo with The Prince. For him, betrayal is more expected under the circumstances, and so he hopes to play them at their own game. By feigning loyalty and kissing up to Lorenzo, Machiavelli improves his chances of obtaining power, even though he likely doesn t believe everything he s saying. For him, his true intentions or beliefs don t matter like with religion and betrayal, his deceitfulness is a useful political tool in a world of deceitful men. With the sixteenth century Florentine power struggle and religious tension, it was difficult for anyone to find stability. While Machiavelli experienced treachery firsthand through being banned from Florence, many Florentines could relate to a general lack of loyalty. Jacks group beats Ralph and his last few followers one night while asleep and they steal Piggy s glasses. Then when they go to get Piggy s glasses back Piggy gets murdered. The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee...Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across that square red rock in the sea. His head opened and stuff came out and turned red (167). The kids do not stop here; Jack is constantly having kids tortured. This shows how far away they are from their old standard and expectations in society. The boys completely overdo it when they try to kill Ralph. They know he is not the beast, but a human and they still try to violently murder him. Ralph is saved when he comes into sight with the naval officer. The kids realized what had become of them when they saw the naval officer. With the appearance of the naval officer the bloodthirsty hunters are instantly reduced to a group of painted urchins led by a little boy who wore the remains of an extraordinary black cap (232, Peter). The boys had gone from a society with high expectations and quickly lost them after being on the island and this disappointed the naval officer. When the destruction is complete, Mr. Golding suddenly restores the external scene to us, not the paradise world of the marooned boys, but our world. Contribution Of Winston Churchill INTRODUCTION Sir Winston Churchill was born in 1874, and is the son of English politician Lord Randolph Churchill and American socialite Lady Randolph Spencer Churchill. He was a British politician who served in the British Army, as a member of Parliament, and as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and 1951 to 1955. From 1940 to 1955, he was the leader of the Conservative Party in Britain. In 1953, he received a Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II and the Nobel Prize for Literature. Churchill was known for arming troops who previously had collaborative ties to Nazis, under the guise of national leverage . When communist friendly forces in Greece became more powerful than he originally anticipated, Churchill aligned Britain s forces with pro Nazi forces, thereby switching alliances, and either killing or injuring hundreds of people in a 1944 unarmed protest in Athens, Greece. In addition, France continued to participate in the American Revolution, in order to get revenge on Britain, this conclusively backfired, as it brought liberal ideas to France and also pushed them further into their economic catastrophe. Ultimately, the Seven Years War and the American Revolution led France to a position of being susceptible to revolution, due to their plundering economic status and the new ideals brought forward. The Enlightenment also altered France s way of thinking, as it introduced revolutionary beliefs. Socially, Enlightenment ideas heavily impacted the French Revolution in the sense that views of liberty reflected in Montesquieu s The Spirit of the Laws as well as beliefs pertaining to revolution, mentioned in John Locke s Two Treaties of Government can be directly linked to the Third Estate s desire to be represented in an equal manner and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. There are multiple different things going on, such as classes to choose, who to be friends with, deciding on colleges and careers, and much more. There are many classes to choose from. Once classes have been chosen, it is now time to pick what level is most beneficial: regular, honors, or Advanced Placement. But be warned, Advanced Placement classes do not benefit US students because they are too rushed and the students are not prepared to take them. It is understood that many parents believe that AP classes can improve their GPA, prepare them for college, and teach them many important skills; such as leadership, determination, and critical thinking. Taking an AP class, even one, can change a student s GPA. The common misconception is that the courses being taken can improve a one s GPA. It is indeed true that doing well in an AP course can drastically improve a student s GPA. The amount of points awarded for having a high grade in the class is much higher than the amount of points for taking the same class at a regular level. An A in a regular class is worth four points, but an A in an AP class is worth 4.08 points. Those .08 points can add up quickly if a student is taking more than one AP course. While doing well in an AP course is rewarded handsomely, doing poorly in an AP course can have a negative impact on a student s GPA. As stated above, the .08 that comes with the course can add up, what with multiple classes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Synergistic Effect On Barbiturates Question 2 The most toxic substance tested was the combination of diazepam and secobarbital sodium with a 96 hour LD50 value of 6.31mg/kg/d when compared to the least toxic substance diazepam with its 96 hour LD50 value of 794.32mg/kg/d. This synergistic effect is due to both barbiturates such as secobarbital sodium and diazepam a benzodiazepine, both are an allosteric activator of Оі aminobutyric acid (GABA) and specifically the GABA A receptor. For diazepam binding is localised between the Оі and О± subunits. However, GABA A receptors also contain alternative allosteric modulatory sites for the binding of secobarbital sodium, however the precise location is yet to be determined. The binding of the previously stated substances increases the binding of GABA, this has the effect of increasing the total transport of chloride ions across the cell membrane of the neuron. The increase in chloride ions within the neuron, hyperpolarizing the membrane potential. Therefore, the difference in resting potential and threshold potential is increased, this causes firing to be less likely. This decreases the chances of firing within the neurons. Causing the desired outcomes, such as initiate sleep and a calming effect (Tan et al., 2011). Diazepam can cause such outcomes in two ways, the first by increasing the binding ability of GABA to activate the receptor and the second by increasing the chance of chloride channel opening as a response to GABA binding. Secobarbital sodium is similar due to producing the same effects as diazepam at lower concentrations but when the concentration rises. Secobarbital sodium directly activates the GABA receptor. This suggests two binding sites which are specific to barbiturates. This explains the higher 96 hour LD50 values compared to diazepam (Makkar et ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was a period of political fragmentation and decentralization [Richard C. Martin]. He was the founder of the Safavid Empire. In 1501, he named himself the Shah, king, of the empire and proclaimed Twelver religion the official religion of state. It took him almost over a decade to consolidate his control over all of Iran, where most of the Persian population still practiced as Sunni. His Qizilbash military was given the task to convert anyone on Safavid territory to Twelver Islamand the army succeeded. Ismail was a remarkable leader when he set his mind to it, yet the Ottoman empire instigated a war against the Safavid empire because of the increase of Shia population. Ismail was caught by surprise and the Qizilbash were defeated. The aftermath of the battle was severe; Ismail was so embarrassed by the defeat he became inattentive to any Qizilbash work and military affairs of state. He broke down and started to write poems about pious Muslims and how they worship their god. The shah died at age 36, after becoming an alcoholic, but the Safavid empire continued for over 200 years after. Since the seventeenth century, doctors have understood that if the pustules merge into sheets across the body the victim will usually die: the virus has split the whole skin. If the victim survives, the pustules turn into scabs and fall off, leaving scars. This is known as ordinary smallpox. Some people develop extreme smallpox, which is loosely called black pox. Doctors separate black pox into two forms flat smallpox and hemorrhagic smallpox. In a case of flat smallpox, the skin remains smooth and doesn t pustulate, but it darkens until it looks charred, and it can slip off the body in sheets. In hemorrhagic smallpox, black, unclotted blood oozes or runs from the mouth and other body orifices. Black pox is close to a hundred per cent fatal. If any sign of it appears in the body, the victim will almost certainly die. In the bloody cases, the virus destroys the linings of the throat, the stomach, the intestines, the rectum, and the vagina, and these membranes disintegrate. Fatal smallpox can destroy the body s entire skin both the exterior skin and the interior skin that lines the passages of the body. Smallpox virus s scientific name is variola.
