Technology and Humanism
Technology comes from a latin
word teknologia w/c means
systematic treatment or craft.
Objectives :
•Explain how technology could be a boon
or bane; and
•Point ways on how to increase humanism
while using technology
What is Humanism?
•a philosophical and ethical stance that
emphasizes the value and agency of human
beings, individually and collectively, and
generally prefers critical thinking and
evidence (rationalism, empiricism) over
established doctrine or faith.
Technology in Education
• Video cameras
•Compact discs
•Computers
•Chalkboards
•Overheard projectors/ LCD, etc..
Threat on technology
• A dilemma is at hand. While there is
overdependence of life in the advanced
industrial countries on technology, there is a
threat that the same tech will destroy the
quality of life in modern society and endanger
society itself.
EXAMPLES ARE:
Technological Industries
Internet Crimes
Negative Effects to the Environment
Communication Gaps
Television Violence and Falsity
• “We shape our tools and thereafter
they shape us.”
- John M. Culkin-
Questions arise like :
• What has man, who is the
author of technology, done
to his fellowmen?
• Is technology bound to
create and then later
destroy?
• Is technology a blessing or
a curse?
• A form of exploitation of
human beings? And
• Is technology
dehumanizing man?
Technology and Education
The ordinary classroom is a potential place
where technology and the issue of humanism
could across.
Now........
Does technology really dehumanize
us?
How can we maintain HUMANISM at this
technology stage?
