Team 08 geospatial user feedback

Team 07 find your farm producer

The team created a solution to promote farms that sell directly to customers by mapping their locations and details. They developed an application and map displaying farm information sourced from an online spreadsheet. Partners from several countries contributed farm data. The goal was to help small farmers and shorten supply chains using open data standards. They plan to continue expanding the dataset and enhancing the application.

Since already 15 years Switzerland has been establishing its Swiss Federal Spatial Data Infrastructure (FSDI). The Swiss FSDI evolved from an infrastructure project to a prioritized eGovernment pillar covering all administrative levels. Policy making, establishment of a legal framework and a paradigm shift from data to service provision (including metadata, data models, infrastructure) were key milestones. geo.admin.ch is the implementation and the portal to the Swiss FSDI according to the Swiss Federal Act on Geoinformation. In 2012 geo.admin.ch has won the 2012 United Nations Public Service Award, 2nd place, in the category of “Advancing Knowledge Management in Government” which rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide. FSDI customers benefit from a very performant and very flexible spatial data infrastructure. Thanks to the flexible underlying cloud infrastructure it was possible for the Swiss Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) to handle the steady growth of the web traffic, which has doubled every year since 2008. This could be achieved by a novel combination of an open source software framework with an innovative cloud computing architecture resulting in an attractive cost/benefit ratio. A major economic benefit can be achieved with the establishment of geo.admin.ch in Switzerland. Some Federal administration benefits for decision-making, planning and improving efficiency of governmental processes are that data production can be accelerated and data exchange processes simplified. Other major achievements are leveraging open access, open standards, open source software, mobile support, map viewer user interface, mashups and API for all and, last but not least, scalability and agility on the infrastructure level thanks to cloud computing.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has activities relevant to the workshop scope of "the current state-of-the-art in satellite data interoperability”. This presentation will focus on two main topics with the option to discuss other relevant topics that the participants may wish to discuss, e.g., WFS3. The two focus areas of development: 1) Geospatial Datacubes and 2) Earth Observation Exploitation Platforms. 1) A Geospatial Datacube provides access to and analytics on analysis ready data (ARD) organized with coordinate axes of space and time with cells in the cube containing data of geospatial features, e.g., imagery. OGC members implementing geospatial datacubes are documenting common practices to spur development and leading to the possibility to federated geospatial datacubes. 2) OGC is forming a Earth Observation Exploitation Platform Domain Working Group with the goal of defining a standards-based framework for cloud-based access to and analysis of EO data. NextGEOSS is a H2020 project that aims to create an open data hub and cloud platform for Earth observation data. It involves 27 partners from 13 countries with a budget of 10 million euros from 2016-2020. The project will develop advanced data discovery tools, enable user feedback, and enhance communities through tailored solutions. It will follow an open, inclusive, and agile development approach aligned with EU open data policies. Various pilot projects will use the data and platform for applications in agriculture, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, and other areas. Cette vision est aujourd'hui la réalité de tous les jours dans les laboratoire de recherche scientifique, et elle va bien au delà de ce que l'on appelle communément "BIG DATA". Microsoft Research et Inria on démarré en 2010 un projet intitulé Azure-Brain (ou A-Brain) dont l'originalité consiste à a la fois construire au dessus de Windows Azure une nouvelle plateforme d'acces aux données massives pour les applications scientifiques, et de se confronter à la réalité de la recherche scientifique. Dans cette session nous vous proposons dans une premiere partie de resituer les enjeux recherche concernant la gestion de données massives dans le cloud, et ensuite de vous presenter la plateforme "TOMUS Blob" cloud storage optimisé sur Azure. Enfin nous vous presenterons le projet A-Brain et les résultats que nous avons obtenus: La neuro-imagerie contribue au diagnostic de certaines maladies du système nerveux. Mais nos cerveaux s'avèrent tous un peu différents les uns des autres. Cette variabilité complique l'interprétation médicale. D'où l'idée de corréler ldes images IRM du cerveaux et le patrimoine génétique de chaque patient afin de mieux délimiter les régions cérébrales qui présentent un intérêt symptomatique. Les images IRM haute définition de ce projet sont produites par la plate-forme Neurospin du CEA (Saclay). Problème pour Les chercheurs : la masse d'informations à traiter. Le CV génétique d'un individu comporte environ un million de données. À cela s'ajoutent des volumes tout aussi colossaux de pixel 3D pour décrire les images. Un data deluge: des peta octets de donnés et potentiellement des années de calcul. C'est donc ici qu'entre en jeu le cloud et une plateforme optimisée sur Azure pour traiter des applications massivement parallèles sur des données massives... Comme l'explique Gabriel Antoniu, son responsable, cette équipe de recherche rennaise a développé “des mécanismes de stockage efficaces pour améliorer l'accès à ces données massives et optimiser leur traitement. Nos développements permettent de répondre aux besoins applicatifs de nos collègues de Saclay.

The EUXDAT project, which received Horizon 2020 funding, has come to an end after three years of collaboration and development. The project developed an e-infrastructure platform to address UN Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal. Key deliverables of the project included the final specification of the infrastructure platform (D4.5), definition of three pilots and scenarios (D5.6), description of the end users' platform (End Users’ Platform v3), and description of the infrastructure platform and services (D4.6, D5.7). Webinars were held in October 2020 to present results of the pilots and infrastructure.
