Theme: Data: presentations focused on data (be it capture, storage, discovery or new data models such as 3D, temporal data, big data).
The aim of this talk is to sum up the standardization efforts (OGC and W3C) in defining 3D web services and models, as well as to show existing implementations to support the discussion.
In the past years, numerous open source projects have started to display 3D globes and 3D data on the web. Standardizing web services, data format and representation models is, therefore, a very hot topic. There are in particular ongoing efforts on the OGC side as well as on the W3C side. The OGC has released a draft candidate for a 3D web service W3DS, the ISO X3D standard proposes an XML-based file format for representing 3D computer graphics and the W3C is considering adding X3D rendering into HTML5. Other projects implement their own web services and formats. On the implementation side, Geoserver supports W3DS and X3D, the X3DOM library prototypes a possible implementation of X3D HTML5 integration and last but not least, browsers with WebGL support are fully able to handle the representation of 3D data on the client side. The talk is going to detail the mentioned elements, show demonstrations of existing implementations and try to suggest a possible path into the 3D web for the FOSS4G community.

This work presents an approach to utilize high resolution surface data as a-priori information for three dimensional path planning at very low altitude. The major challenge is preserve features while reducing the amount of data to a minimum. Non significant height points are eliminated by a neighbor search, performed within a data structure generated from pseudo 3D Delaunay meshing. A comparison to an alternatively implemented simplification shows which inherent building features can be preserved. For highlighting the feasibility of the approach, the processing results of real urban surface data from the inner city of Berlin is presented and used for sampling based path planning of an unmanned helicopter.

Walking in the Cloud: A New Paradigm in Geospatial WorldICIMOD
Cloud computing allows scalable and efficient use of computing resources in the internet cloud. The use of cloud computing is increasing across all the application domains, including in the field of GIS and remote sensing.
The advent of Google Earth Engine (GEE) in particular has brought about a revolutionary change in the way we use geospatial technology. The GEE is a cloud based geospatial platform that stores petabyte of satellite imagery and geospatial data and enables carrying out of complex image processing tasks and spatial analyses without the need of any GIS and remote sensing software.
The decision making process related to urban areas synthetizes a lot of data taking into account
numerous parameters. The indicators produced from simulations or data mining on 3D city models (3DCM)
can be a great help into these decision-making processes. The problem is to acquire and process the 3DCM
in order to produce these indicators at city scale. The EnVIE project proposes a framework to perform the
acquisition of 3DCM and then to produce 3D or 2D metadata on these models. As several city councils have
been interviewed in the scope of the project to describe their real needs, the computed metadata are directly
usable into the decision-making process. The main contribution of this framework is to merge existing
techniques to build a pipeline allowing to compute lighting and wind simulation, and to extract socioeconomic
metadata with data-mining techniques. This on-going work builds a link between indicators at
the building scale and 2D indicators at larger scale from GIS, and therefore is a step towards an indicator
production process at full-scale range.

Une grande diversité de données s’y retrouvent, tels les avertissements météo, les prévisions publiques en XML, les données brutes de prévision, les observations météorologiques et bien davantage. Le Datamart du SMC jouit d’une grande popularité avec plus de 12 millions d’accès quotidiennement.
Les services web géospatiaux GeoMet permettent au public d’intégrer dans leurs outils SIG, cartes interactives ou appareil mobile, les données brutes de modèles de prévision numérique du temps et de la mosaïque nord-américaine des radars météo par le biais de deux standards de l’Open Geospatial Consortium : le WMS et le KML. Qu’il s’agisse par exemple de la pluie observée par les radar météo ou les prévisions de précipitation de neige ou une animation des prévisions de températures , les utilisations de ces données sont nombreuses et d’une grande valeur pour de nombreux décideurs.

The 3D Elevation Program, managed by the US Geological Survey, is acquiring quality level 2 or better light detecting and ranging (lidar) data over the conterminous United States, Hawaii, and US Territories to meet the growing need for high-resolution 3-D representations of Earth's surface, vegetation, and constructed features.
OpenTopography, supported by the USGS Community for Data Integration (CDI) program, is developing well-documented and customizable Jupyter Notebook-based Python workflows for programmatically accessing, processing, and visualizing 3DEP data products for a variety of use-cases geared toward USGS applications and for users of point cloud data across the geospatial community.

The ultimate goal of mago3D project is developing an open source based digital twin platform that can replicate and simulate the real world objects, processes, and phenomena on web environment. mago3D is on its way to achieve this goal now. Currently mago3D more focuses on managing and visualization of various types of 3D data ranging from simple box style extrusion model, point clouds, realistic mesh, to complex BIM(Building Information Modeling), AEC(Architecture, Engineering, Construction) data. mago3D supports industry standards 3D formats such as IFC, CityGML, IndoorGML, 3DS, Collada DAE, OBJ, LAS, JT, and so on. mago3D has been used in various industry sectors including ship building, urban management, indoor data management, and national defense. In this talk I showcased several real projects that had employed the mago3D and talked about what I'd learned during this projects. I also talked more about the future plan of mago3D towards visualizing/simulating of {static and dynamic data}, {underground and overground features}, {indoor and outdoor spaces}, {objects and phenomena} at the same time on web browser.
As a tech-savvy country, there're lots of discussions and activities around digital twin in Korea. I also shared my real experiences on this in this talk.

Data Centers - Striving Within A Narrow Range - Research Report - MCG - May 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) expects to see demand and the changing evolution of supply, facilitated through institutional investment rotation out of offices and into work from home (“WFH”), while the ever-expanding need for data storage as global internet usage expands, with experts predicting 5.3 billion users by 2023. These market factors will be underpinned by technological changes, such as progressing cloud services and edge sites, allowing the industry to see strong expected annual growth of 13% over the next 4 years.
Whilst competitive headwinds remain, represented through the recent second bankruptcy filing of Sungard, which blames “COVID-19 and other macroeconomic trends including delayed customer spending decisions, insourcing and reductions in IT spending, energy inflation and reduction in demand for certain services”, the industry has seen key adjustments, where MCG believes that engineering cost management and technological innovation will be paramount to success.
MCG reports that the more favorable market conditions expected over the next few years, helped by the winding down of pandemic restrictions and a hybrid working environment will be driving market momentum forward. Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.
Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

For massive graphs that fit in RAM, but not in GPU memory, it is possible to take
advantage of a shared memory system with multiple CPUs, each with multiple cores, to
accelerate pagerank computation. If the NUMA architecture of the system is properly taken
into account with good vertex partitioning, the speedup can be significant. To take steps in
this direction, experiments are conducted to implement pagerank in OpenMP using two
different approaches, uniform and hybrid. The uniform approach runs all primitives required
for pagerank in OpenMP mode (with multiple threads). On the other hand, the hybrid
approach runs certain primitives in sequential mode (i.e., sumAt, multiply).

Traditionally, databases have treated timestamps just as another data type. However, when performing real-time analytics, timestamps should be first class citizens and we need rich time semantics to get the most out of our data. We also need to deal with ever growing datasets while keeping performant, which is as fun as it sounds.
It is no wonder time-series databases are now more popular than ever before. Join me in this session to learn about the internal architecture and building blocks of QuestDB, an open source time-series database designed for speed. We will also review a history of some of the changes we have gone over the past two years to deal with late and unordered data, non-blocking writes, read-replicas, or faster batch ingestion.
