‘Coromandal Fishers’ is a poem by Sarojini Naidu. It deals with the dreams, 
determination and hard work of the fishermen. They are willing to fight against the odds 
in life with confidence in order to fulfill their dreams.

Coromandal, Fisher, Arms, Catamarans, Capture, The leaping wealth of the sea etc 
Poetic Devices 
Rhyming words: (Eg: light-night, free-see) 
Simile: (The word is compared to a child that has cried all night)

Teacher leads them into the poem by introducing 
something about the life of sea brothers and fishermen. 
Presentation 
Teacher shows the picture of Sarojini Naidu and a short 
description of the poetess with the help of ICT. Then writes 
the name of the lesson on Black Board.

Micro-processing of the poem 
Teacher asks the students to recite the poem silently and 
keeps track on their reading / x/? / !/ . Then teacher asks 
them to find out the difficult words in it. Then teacher 
explains it by using different techniques. Every meaning 
are introduced with the help of ICT.

Arms - Hands

Catamarans- boat with parallel twin hulls
Gather – collect 
Capture – Catch 
The leaping wealth of the sea – Fish 
Then teacher asks them to sit in groups and tell the 
theme of the poem. Then to present their idea before the 
teacher. 
Loud Recitation by the Teacher 
Teacher recites the poem rhythmically. 
Appreciation of the Poem 
The poem ‘Coromandal Fishers’ was written by 
Sarojini Naidu. This poem deals with the dreams, 
determination and hard work of the fishermen. The speaker 
in the poem is fisherman. He asks his fellow fishermen to 
rise and get ready for fishing. Their dream is to catch 
fish which is the leaping wealth of the sea. 
Poetic Devices 
Rhyming words: (the words which occur at the end of the
each line having the same rhythmic repetition). 
ͽ Light-night ͽ Free-sea 
Simile: (Poetical comparison of one thing with another 
using the words: like/as). 
Eg: The wind is compared to a child that has cried all night. 
Metaphor: (Application of a name or description to 
something to which it is not literally applicable) 
Eg: Fishermen said that, we are the sons of the sea.

Teacher asks the following questions:

2. Who is the speaker in the poem? 
3. What does the term ‘Coromandal Fishers’ meant? 
4. Who are the brothers in the poem? 
Loud Recitation by the Students 
Teacher asks to some pupil to recite the poem loudly. 
Teacher provides proper scaffoldings.

Teacher asks them to sit in groups and give an activity. 
‘Prepare a profile of the poetess Sarojini Naidu’.

PROFILE 
SAROJINI NAIDU (1879-1949) 
Sarojini Naidu was born in February 13, 1879 in 
Hyderabad. She was known as the Indian Nightingale. 
Her first collection of poems titled ‘Golden Threshold’ 
was published in 1905. Her poems are in English, but 
have an Indian soul. The independence of India was the 
heart and soul of her works. After the independence 
she became the first woman governor of Uttar Pradesh. 
She passed away in March 2, 1949. 
Review 
Teacher asks the following questions: 
1. Who is the speaker in the poem? Who does he address? 
2. What does the speaker ask his friends to do? 
Conclusion 
Teacher concludes the poem. 
‘Coromandal Fishers’ is a poem written by Sarojini Naidu. 
It deals with the dreams, determination and hard work of 
fishermen. The speaker of the poem is a fisherman who asks 
his fellow fishermen to rise and get ready for fishing. The 
leaping wealth of the sea is fish and they consider, they are
the sons of the sea.

  • 1. TEACHING PRACTICE LESSON PLAN. Preliminary Details Name of the teacher : Sreedevi.A.S Date : 28/07/2014 Name of the school : Govt.V.H.S.S.Aryanad. Standard : VIII Subject : English Division : A Unit : I, On The Wings O Wishes. Period : 3rd Subunit : Coromandal Fishers(I &II Stanzas) Duration : 45mnts Issue : Human Resource Management. Sub issue: The need for having proper aims in life. Content Analysis ‘Coromandal Fishers’ is a poem by Sarojini Naidu. It deals with the dreams, determination and hard work of the fishermen. They are willing to fight against the odds in life with confidence in order to fulfill their dreams. New Vocabulary Coromandal, Fisher, Arms, Catamarans, Capture, The leaping wealth of the sea etc Poetic Devices Rhyming words: (Eg: light-night, free-see) Simile: (The word is compared to a child that has cried all night) Curricular Objectives ♦ to create an awareness to become a resourceful and enterprising person in the society. ♦ to create an awareness about the importance of will power and dedication to address real life issues. ♦ to think critically and take one’s own stand regarding issues related to human resource development. ♦ to understand new vocabulary items like : catamarans, fisher, capture etc.

Pre-requisites The learner, ♦ have read and enjoyed poems. ♦ have heard of life of fishermen. ♦ have heard of Sarojini Naidu. ♦ have heard the stories of fishermen. Process Skill Raising Questions (students asks some questions to clarify their doubts) Comparing (students compare their own work with teacher’s version) Product Profile. Teaching-learning Resources Course book, Source book, Dictionary, Pictures etc Classroom Interaction Procedure Assessment Informal Interaction The teacher creates a good rapport with the students. ͽ Good morning children. ͽ How are you? ͽ Have you had your breakfast? ͽ Are you comfortable? ͽ How is the weather outside? Entry Activity Teacher gives some lots and asks them to enact the roles in it.
  • 3.  Fishing ● Selling fish  Rowing a boat ● Throwing a net Link Talk Teacher leads them into the poem by introducing something about the life of sea brothers and fishermen. Presentation Teacher shows the picture of Sarojini Naidu and a short description of the poetess with the help of ICT. Then writes the name of the lesson on Black Board. ● Born in February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad ● Known as the Indian Nightingale ● The first woman governor of Uttar Pradesh ● Passed away in March 2, 1949 - SAROJINI NAIDU (1879-1949) Micro-processing of the poem Teacher asks the students to recite the poem silently and keeps track on their reading / x/? / !/ . Then teacher asks them to find out the difficult words in it. Then teacher explains it by using different techniques. Every meaning are introduced with the help of ICT.

  • 5. Gather – collect Capture – Catch The leaping wealth of the sea – Fish Then teacher asks them to sit in groups and tell the theme of the poem. Then to present their idea before the teacher. Loud Recitation by the Teacher Teacher recites the poem rhythmically. Appreciation of the Poem The poem ‘Coromandal Fishers’ was written by Sarojini Naidu. This poem deals with the dreams, determination and hard work of the fishermen. The speaker in the poem is fisherman. He asks his fellow fishermen to rise and get ready for fishing. Their dream is to catch fish which is the leaping wealth of the sea. Poetic Devices Rhyming words: (the words which occur at the end of the
  • 6. each line having the same rhythmic repetition). ͽ Light-night ͽ Free-sea Simile: (Poetical comparison of one thing with another using the words: like/as). Eg: The wind is compared to a child that has cried all night. Metaphor: (Application of a name or description to something to which it is not literally applicable) Eg: Fishermen said that, we are the sons of the sea. Scaffolding Questions Teacher asks the following questions: 1. Who wrote the poem ‘Coromandal Fishers’? 2. Who is the speaker in the poem? 3. What does the term ‘Coromandal Fishers’ meant? 4. Who are the brothers in the poem? Loud Recitation by the Students Teacher asks to some pupil to recite the poem loudly. Teacher provides proper scaffoldings. Discourse Construction Teacher asks them to sit in groups and give an activity. ‘Prepare a profile of the poetess Sarojini Naidu’.   • 7. PROFILE SAROJINI NAIDU (1879-1949) Sarojini Naidu was born in February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad. She was known as the Indian Nightingale. Her first collection of poems titled ‘Golden Threshold’ was published in 1905. Her poems are in English, but have an Indian soul. The independence of India was the heart and soul of her works. After the independence she became the first woman governor of Uttar Pradesh. She passed away in March 2, 1949. Review Teacher asks the following questions: 1. Who is the speaker in the poem? Who does he address? 2. What does the speaker ask his friends to do? Conclusion Teacher concludes the poem. ‘Coromandal Fishers’ is a poem written by Sarojini Naidu.
