The cluster policy of North Rhine-Westphalia's government aims to "strengthen strengths", supporting such partnerships in 16 different industries and technological fields. The environmental technology cluster Umwelttechnologien.NRW works under the auspices of North Rhine-Westphalia's Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Consumer Protection (www.mkulnv.nrw.de). The cluster pursues the central goal of continuing to improve NRW's already prominent position in the GreenTech industry. It has set itself the following guiding objectives: 1. Improve competitiveness and create high-quality and innovative jobs 2. About 6 years ago I started working for Maersk, the market leader in the shipping industry. At the time, a customer had to book a container via phone or email. A lot has changed in the past 6 years and Maersk has taken the lead by developing a professional e-commerce platform with all relevant features. The management team of the company consists of three individuals - Brian Kamuk from Denmark who is the CEO and founder with experience in market research, financials, and analytics as well as a background in the Danish Army. Sakib Hameed from England leads R&D with an engineering background. Quentin Macé from France handles sales and marketing and was previously a finalist in an entrepreneurship contest. All three are students studying international sales and marketing management who have won several international case competitions.

Innovation is one of the key enablers for European enterprises to compete in global markets. The term ‘innovation’ is constantly used in speeches of managers, politicians, public administrators. However, in the large majority of cases, the term is used as a generic 'place holder', a sort of container whose actual content is left to the intuition. For this reason it is important to deeply elaborate, specifically on the notion of Enterprise Innovation, to better understand the essence and meaning of innovation. Innovation stems from a virtuous mix of intuition, creativity, and a solid background knowledge. Each innovation endeavour has its own characteristics, largely different from previous experiences. It falls in the category of ‘wicked problems’, i.e., problems difficult to solve because of incomplete, fuzzy, changing requirements. Nevertheless, there are recurring patterns and it is possible to conceive systematic methods, and supporting information systems, to promote and manage innovation avoiding the risk to close it in a ‘cage’, risking depressing the fundamental creativity and fantasy. This talk will present an innovative framework for enterprise innovation that includes a methodology and an innovation management platform which is based on an generic behavioural pattern (i.e., independent of the industrial sector), a strong knowledge orientation, and an innovation monitoring system funded on a number of Key Performance Indicators, to constantly keep the progress of the innovation project under control.
