TAXONOMIC
CLASSIFICATION OF LIFE
General Biology 2: Lesson No. 8 -Q3
After going through lesson, you are
expected to:
1. classify organisms into hierarchy of groups based on
similarities and distinct characteristics; and
2. describe the Linnaean system of classification;
3. name the living organisms.
General Biology 2: Lesson No. 8 Taxonomic Classification of Life
Most Essential Learning Competency
• Identify the unique/distinctive characteristics of a specific taxon to other taxa
(STEM_BIO11/12IIIhj-15).
General Biology 2: Lesson No. 8 Taxonomic Classification of Life
INTRODUCTION
Every individuals have their own and unique characteristics.
Each is varied and different from one another.
Similarities and differences of individuals rooted for science of
classification-Taxonomy
At present, classification of living organisms made a significant
contribution for different applications.

WHAT’S NEW
Activity 1. SAY MY NAME
Direction: Share to the class about the
meaning of your name.
Guided Questions:
1. Do you know how your parents
came up with your name?
2. What’s the meaning behind your
name?

WHAT I
PRE-TEST WITH A TWIST
Direction:
• The class will play a naming game.
• A category will be given about anything and each
student should give a name related to the given
category.
• Those who failed to name or give a wrong name will
answer a question for the pre-test.

EARLY TAXONOMIST
•2000 years ago, Aristotle
was the first taxonomist
•Aristotle divided
organisms into plants &
animals;
•He subdivided them by
their habitat ---land, sea,
or air dwellers
General Biology 2: Lesson No. 8 Taxonomic Classification of Life
EARLY TAXONOMIST
•John Ray, a botanist, was
the first to use Latin for
naming
• His names were very
long descriptions telling
everything about the
plant
General Biology 2: Lesson No. 8 Taxonomic Classification of Life
EARLY TAXONOMIST
• Carolus Linnaeus is 18th century
taxonomist
• Classified organisms by their structure
Developed naming system still used
today
• Called as the “Father of Taxonomy”
• Developed the modern system of
naming known as binomial
nomenclature = Two-word name
(Genus & species)

RULES OF BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE
• There are two international codes which are agreed upon by all the
biologists over the entire world in giving name of the living organism.
It follows protocols in naming to make sure that each organism gets a
specific name and that name is globally identified. They are:
International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) – Deals with
the biological nomenclature for plants.
 International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) – Deals with
the biological nomenclature of animals.
General Biology 2: Lesson No. 8 Taxonomic Classification of Life
RULES OF BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE
• Additionally, in binomial nomenclature rules for writing the scientific
names of organisms include the following:
 All the scientific names of organisms are usually Latin. Hence,
they are written in italics.
There are two parts of a name. The first word identifies the genus
and the second word identifies the species.
When the names are handwritten, they are underlined or
italicized if typed. This is done to specify its Latin origin
