4. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
• From product labels, identify the active ingredient(s) of
cleaning products used at home (S11/12PS-IIIi-j-31)
• differentiate active ingredients of household cleaning
products from other cleaning ingredients
• demonstrate caution in using different household cleaning
products due to their specific active ingredients
• propose solutions to help care for and protect the health
and environment by showing research about the harmful
effects of a specific active ingredient
6. ACTIVITY
RELATE
MamaCH!
You will be shown and presented three (3)
common scenarios that may have happened
at home. Your “Mama” will be the main
character of these scenes.
7. ACTIVITY
RELATE
MamaCH!
RELATE MUCH: If you can relate with the
scenario presented, use your fingers to make a
hashtag sign #RelateMuch and tell your
seatmeat on the left and right “Relate na
relate”.
MEH!: Act as if you do not relate with the
scene.
9. SCENE #1

22. CLEANING PRODUCTS AT
HOME
Cleaning products play an essential role in our daily
lives at home, in school, and in the office.
They are used to remove dirt, including dust, stains, bad
smells, and clutter on surfaces.

25. ACTIVE
INGREDIENTS
An active ingredient is the ingredient that
makes a product work effectively.
If I bought an iced café latte from Starbucks, what is that
ACTIVE INGREDIENT that keeps me awake after drinking the
coffee?

30. ACIDS
These are substances with pH lower than 7. When these
acids used in cleaning products, they help break down
difficult stains, such as rust or mineral salts.
31. Cleaning products containing acidic active ingredients:
drain cleaner toilet bowl
cleaner
tile cleaner and
mold remover
rust remover
ACIDS
32. Muriatic acid contains
a solution of
hydrochloric acid
(HCl) used to clean
toilets and tiles.
toilet bowl cleaner
ACIDS
33. These are substances with pH greater than 7. Those
products with basic active ingredients are useful in
removing fatty and oily soils from surfaces.
BASES OR ALKALIS
34. Cleaning products containing basic active ingredients:
drain cleaner hand soaps bleach
BASES OR ALKALIS
body soaps
35. These are organic compounds that form a bond with ions or
molecules with metal ions. Stains with ions are removed
from surfaces when they bind with the chelates.
CHELANTS OR CHELATING AGENTS
Chelates are like claw-shaped molecules that can remove
heavy stains or metal ions.
36. Cleaning products containing chelating active ingredients:
laundry
detergents
hard surface
cleaners
CHELANTS OR CHELATING AGENTS
bath soaps
37. These are substances that hold the oils and dirt in
suspension or delay. The name surfactant comes from the
phrase “SURFace ACTive AgeNT.” This changes the water’s
surface tension.
SURFACTANTS
38. Cleaning products containing surfactant active ingredients:
laundry
detergents
dishwashing
liquids
body soap
SURFACTANTS
shampoo
39. The active ingredient usually makes up only
a very small amount of the total weight of the
product.

CASE
1. Your group will investigate different household
cleaning agents by reading a case scenario about
the usage of a certain household cleaning product
and its effects to the health and environment.
2. Look at the screen to see which group you
belong. Silently proceed to your different areas.
42. 3-4 Planning Managers – The planning managers are responsible for making a script of their
advertisement, picture tableau preparation, song, poem, spoken poetry preparation, or rap preparation.

3. Assign ROLES to each group member.
1 Director – The director is responsible for the group.
• Reads directions and the case scenario to the group; • Keeps group on-task; • The only group member
allowed to talk to the teacher; • Leads the clean-up.
2-3 Technicians - The technicians are in charge of recording all group insights.
• Writes the solutions made by the group; • Checks the answers; • Assists with the clean-up.
2 Materials Managers - The material managers are responsible for obtaining all necessary materials
and/or equipment for the presentation.
• The only person allowed out of seat to pick up needed materials; • Organizes materials and/or equipment in
the work space; • Facilitates use of materials during case investigation; • Assists with conducting procedures; •
Returns all materials to designated area.

4. Presentation Flow (3 minutes maximum time)
a. Brand Investigation: What brand does
your group investigate? What kind of
cleaning product is it (bath soap, laundry
detergent, disinfectant, fabric softener,
etc.)?
b. Identifying: What is/are the active
ingredient(s) of your cleaning
product?
Write a and b answers on the YELLOW PAPER.

c. Proposals: What solutions would you propose to help minimize or lessen
the harmful effects of using household products with harmful active
ingredient(s)? Give at least 1 feasible proposal through:
Group 1: an
advertisement (short
skit)
Group 2: a picture

51. ASSIGNMENT
PAIR AND
SHARE
Choose a partner. You are going to cut an ingredient
label of a cleaning product that you always use at
home (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.). Try to identify
the active ingredient(s) by writing it on a ½ sheet of
paper and write a 3-sentence reflection each (you and
your pair) as to how these ingredients improve your
everyday life such as proper hygiene. Then, staple or
paste the ingredient label at the back.
