Andrew Goodwin is a theorist who has researched music videos for many years. He believes that traditional narratives do not always apply to pop videos. In 1992, he released a book called "Dancing in the Distraction Factory" which listed some of the codes and conventions that music videos follow. The book discusses how music videos tend to not follow traditional narratives and instead focus on the song itself. It also notes that videos commonly feature singers looking at the camera and breaking the fourth wall. Goodwin identified three types of relationships between songs and videos: illustration, amplification, and disjuncture.
