Should factual writing contain bias?
The term factual is usually concerned with facts and mostly contains facts
rather than giving theories or personalinterpretation.
Examples of factual writing include national, reginal, local and international
news stories. Factual stories describe an event without using subjective
descriptions or contemplating that the reader feels a certain way about a
particular event.
For example, if a reporter was to write an article about a local county show,
they might include details such as whatwill be at the show for example what
type of show is it, is it a car show or an animal show, whattypes of beverages
will be available and stalls. The reporter may also give opening and closing
times for the show. However, thereporter does not tell the reader what
beverages will be there to eat or whatstalls are going to be at the show.
It’s very importantto note that some factual writing only includes a description
of one event. Other types of factual writing, called feature stories describea
series of related events over a specified period of time from the perspectiveof
numerous people, places and things that are involved in the ongoing event,
such as political campaign.
The term bias is a tendency to lean in a certain direction, often to the
detriment of an open mind. For those who are biased tend to believe what
they want to believe with no opinions and refusing to consider opinions from
others. Bias is an inclination towards one way of thinking often based on how
one has been raised.
Biased in writing: Writers should write objectively and inclusively to receive
respect and trust fromreaders, and avoid alienating the readers.
The term “objective” means to write with curiosity rather than writing with a
pre-setopinion and to engage with research, rather than presenting a personal
preference.
Biased can often be found within the news, for example: bias towards Donald
Trump can be found in certain instances of reporting, an editorial published in
the Washington poston December 1st
, 2015 was titled “Donald Trump is a
bigot and racist”.
This is biased because you don’t know if Trump is racistor not although the
title says it he could be a very nice kind person.
Another example of bias is the TMZ newspaper reporters theseare very
biased, they don’t put across their opinion on everything but they only put on
negative stories about certain celebrities. For example, Justin Bieber is TMZ’s
main target, everything that they upload onto their site is always negative
about him, they do this becauseit makes more and more people turn against
him. If you go onto their website the firstthing you always see is something
negative about him.
The public literally go onto this site just to read negative stories about
celebrities. The people who think positivethings about the celebrities will
respond badly towards the stories because they will be thinking it’s unfair no
one really sees the positive sides to why people do this to celebrities.
In my very own opinion I think when it comes to factual writing bias should not
be present or even be allowed to be because, once you start to include
people’s own opinions then the facts start to move from been to factual to
opinion, if the factual information is not 100% facts it’s not going to be helpful
to anyone who’s looking for information as the information may or may not be
true which makes it harder for researchers and publishers.
If you are biased you can upset people and startarguments because the
information isn’t always true which can causeupset to those who strongly
believe something but then someoneelse is been biased towards it. For
example, if you strongly believed that a celebrity was a helpful person who
does a lot for charity but then your friend says all the bad things about the
celebrity it may upsetyou becauseyou feel different about it, and you look up
to that celebrity as an idol.
You can also see these things in magazines and it could upset someonewhos a
fan of these celebrities, I don’t think magazines and any other pieces of factual
writing should even be allowed to write things that they don’t know is true or
not I think everything should be fact becauseit can upsetthem as well as their
fans.
Some people may think that factual products contain bias becausesome topics
about history events for example the war, people didn’t want to read about
something horribleand negative which has happened to the world in a positive
way. If you put something positive about the war in this would end up
upsetting people because no good can really come out of a war and this is not
what you want as a writer, I think it’s important that you either keep it
completely factual or bias in a way that information is included which people
want to read, because you can be bias in two ways you can be bias about the
good things and the bad things or you can be bias and only include half of the
people’s opinions.
Another example is an instruction manual these will have no bias what so ever
as there all fact and need to be fact for example if you are baking a cake the
ingredients and instructions need to be fact they need to be correct in order to
bake the perfect cake, otherwiseit would be wrong and the customer wouldn’t
be happy that their cakes gone wrong even though they havefollowed the
recipe and instructions.
Overall, I think that bias in factual writing depends on the topic that you are
writing aboutfor example instruction manuals shouldn’tbe bias and
magazines should not be bias however if you need to put opinions in try make
them positiveand not horrible this way I think bias should be allowed but only
if its positive.
