2. As thriller is a popular genre it can be quite hard to narrow down and select our target
audience , so we decided to focus on our sub-genre of either crime or psychological
thriller as these allow us to aim our trailer at an appropriate audience who are
interested in this genre. With crime and psychological I believe this would capture the
interest of a younger audience of around the ages of 16+.
By researching into our target audience it will allow us to get a general idea of who we
should be aiming our trailer at and what we should include to attract their attention. We
will categories our target audience using socio-economic grouping , life style categories
and the ITV sales category all allowing us to get a greater insight into who will be our
best target audience.
3. Socio-economic
Definition – A system of demographic classification in the UK, it is a
way of identifying groups if people based on occupation and income; this
classification ranges form E-A.
From this we believe our best target audience will be either C2+D+C as
our targeted age is younger people aged 16+ so at this age they are able
to work however most will either be in part time work or unemployed
fitting into these categories.C1 may also fit into our target audience. The
issues with this category is that it focuses on audiences job and income
therefore it ignores other important factors that can help identify
potential factors that'll help us influence them to watch our film such as
their likes and dislikes, hobbies and taste therefore we cant clearly
identify a link within this category other than their income. Another issue
is that it is also abased mainly on peoples qualifications and skills which
part of our target audience may not hold yet therefore its harder to
select.
Overall, our target audience within this category will either be C2 , D or
E as we believe this best fits our audience who would watch our thriller
trailer .
A
High-ranking a manager in industry or
professions such as law or medicine.
B
Middle managers in companies or public
services such as education.
C
1
Junior managers or supervisors in industry or
public service, educated professionals, i.e.
teachers.
C
2
Skilled manual workers.
D
Unskilled manual workers.
E
The unemployed or those on very low income
from casual work.
4. ITV SALES
■ The splitting up of the population in relation to particular characteristics such
as gender, age, race, income employment, economic status, sexuality,
education etc.
■ From this I believe that AD,A3,ME,WO,M3 and W3 would be our potential
target as they're all related in some way.AD,A3,ME and M3 are related in
the fact that they’re all male and mainly aged between 16-34, by analysing
these categories we can get a wider view of who our target audience will be as
we can base it on more than one category. The female categories are the
same as the males however fit into other categories which include WO and W3
.During this we can also identify categories which don’t relate to our target
audience which include C+AA,HW,HC and MA ,this is because they’re not
within our targeted age range ,we cannot base our target audience around
social class as its hard to identify which class a person is in ,also housewives
with children are the least likely to watch are trailer as the children are
underage so they would be able to watch or trailer as it isn’t age appropriate.
Then ITV sales target a niche audience better than the socio-economic
allowing us to get a better understanding of who our target audience would be
as it gives a wider range of categories which each relate to each other in some
way allowing more detail and specific factors to be noted. The limitation of this
is that it still labels people based on gender and age so its more stereotypical.
5. Life style Categories
The categories are:
Cowboys People who are defined as wanting to make
quickly and easily.
Cynics People who doubt the credibility of ideas
often
Drifters People who are unsure as to what they want
Drop-
Outs
Describes people who do not want to get
committed in any way
Egoists People who are concerned with getting the
most pleasure out of life
Groupies Describes people who want to be accepted
by those around them.
Innovato
rs
People who want to make their mark on the
world.
Puritans People who feel that they have done their
duty.
Rebels Describes people who want the world to fit
in with their ideals.
Tradition
alists
People who want everything to remain the
same.
Trendies Describes people who are desperate to
have the admiration of their peer group.
Utopians People who want to make the world a better
place.
Audiences can be defined by the way they lived.
I believe this along with the ITV SALES category will allow us to select
our most appropriate target audience for our trailer. From this we
believe that the people most likely to watch our film trailer
includes:traditionalists,trendies,groupies and egoists.
Traditionalist want everything to remain the same therefore as we are
doing a thriller trailer this is a traditional genre, which has been
around long so and many films have been created within this genre
therefore attracting them to watch ours. Trendies would watch our
trailer as they want to remain in style and to be the first to see a film
within their social group therefore they’re more likely to be the fist to
watch our trailer then discuss their thoughts with others with a similar
group. Egoists want to get the most out of life therefore they would
want to witness new upcoming films so they would watch our trailer.
Finally groupies want to be accepted by those around them so they’re
quite sheepish and mainstream therefore if a new thriller is coming
out they would want to watch it so they can discuss it with those in a
group and be accepted by what they thought of it. This is the best
category as we can tell peoples lifestyle by what category they fit into
allowing us to gain a better view and see who is most likely to watch
our thriller,
6. Audience profile:

■ Age: 18

■ Income: little( fitting into E)
■ Education: University

■ Lifestyle category- groupies

Most suitable to our trailer:
Gender-Either gender would suit our trailer as with the genre of thriller its
appealing to all. However with the sub genres they may be preferred more to one
gender i.e. males may be more interested in crime thrillers while women are more
attracted by psychological thrillers.
AGE: We believe our ideal age for our thriller trailer is 16-25 as we believe
theses are the most likely to see the trailers in cinemas, online and on social
media attracting their attention.
Culture: We believe western cultures are most likely to watch our thriller as
they’re highly impacted by the media and are stereotypically influenced by it.
ITV demographic: AD,A3,ME,WO,M3 and W3 are all our main target
audience we identified for our thrillers. Each individuals section relates in some
way to another making all the ideal audience.
Lifestyle Categories: Either traditionalists, trendies ,groupies or egoists would
all be one of our ideal target audience .Each would watch our thriller trailer and
are most likely to help share and promote it to others within the similar category.
Socio-economic: C2+D+C of this category are our ideal target audience that
we’ve identified as they're likely to be common within the age group of our target
audience .
Media Usage: Social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), Film & TV (Netflix),
Mobile phone (social media, games, digital viewing)
are all important for our thriller that’s why we believe our ideal target audience
would use social media helping to promote our trailer to a wider audience.
Basic target audience
profile:
7. Rubicam & Young, Cross Cultural Consumer Characterisation ('4 Cs‘) The theory of ‘The 4 Cs’ matches our audience
profile even though although this is usually seen to be used for larger marketing aspects and Branding , we believe our
audience is based under the following:
1. Mainstreamers -We believe this audience would match ours as the genre of thriller is seen as an traditional genre which
many enjoy .Also with this there's a massive range of sub-genres giving us an advantage. For crime specifically, we feel
this group would be more interested as it allows less individuality than Psychological and they will then see themselves
within that.
2. Achievers-Thrillers can offer a quality of production due to an increase in digital technology, but we feel this target
audience would prefer other genres instead – as thrillers still do depend on traditional filming methods. Specifically as
our production would be a low-budget and aimed towards a target audience that are not within this group because of
their socio-economical.
3. Aspirers-Due to an increase in the ‘indie’ social groups, we feel a thriller would cover these and allow the person to
become part of a highly popular social group – which they want. For example, watching many popular films such as ‘The
Hunger Games’, ‘James Bond’ and ‘The Fast and Furious’, they will be able to communicate about these and therefore,
obtain a social status.
4. Explores- Again, as thrillers have recently become more popular within the target audience of 16-25, we feel the reason
for this is because of groups such as explores. Yet, they still are even though it is more mainstream now because of the
wide range in sub-genres. For example, action and romance are most popular, yet psychological tends to be aimed
towards this particular target group because it offers a different portrayal within film and reality.
5. Resigned- We feel this target group will be amongst the most popular to watch thrillers because of the genre being
stemmed from early on in the film industry.
8. Hypodermic Needle Theory
■ We believe that this target group will be one of the most popular to watch thrillers
because of the genre being stemmed from early on in the film industry.
‘Inject the audience with a message that the audience will no question’.
Passive audiences, those who are easily led, influenced and manipulated
A passive audience will believe the distorted ideology that may be present in the
protagonist/antagonists behaviour, specifically seen in crime and psychological.
Making the audience not question the motives of the characters and include more
verisimilitude of the society being displayed. Such as the corrupt, consumer society
and rebellion that is within the film ‘Fight Club’.
