Over the past 5 years we have heard predictions of an impending worker shortage due to the retirement of the baby boomers. Predictions are that the retirement of baby boomers will create a drain in knowledge, experience and leadership in our workforce. With the recent downturn in the economy, most organizations did not focus on this trend. However, now that we appear to be in an economic recovery the discussion is back on the table with greater intensity. But did anyone actually speak to the boomers or is this just a prediction?
Meetings bring people together to discuss a predetermined topic. However, too many are poorly planned and managed, and therefore fail to satisfy objectives when they do not simply waste time. The operating expenses of time wasted include related meeting expenditures, salaries, and opportunity costs.
Many board of directors are in conversations about board renewal and board recruitment, with 35% of boards facing the loss of at least three board members in the next three to four years. Around the boardroom table there are questions as to whether the board is entrenched, or high performing, and whether term limits are needed? How can you accurately assess whether fresh thinking or a seasoned perspective from a long-serving board member is most valuable to your board? And how do you ensure equitable influence and an equal voice between newcomers and loyal directors?

While an effective board has always been important, it is especially essential in periods of economic turbulence. Board members who offer independent insights from their own experience, and provide access to external resources are critical to management when making decisions key to organizational viability. Building and sustaining a high performance board requires an investment of time, the right leadership and a thoughtful strategy. It is important to align the board’s role and its members’ expectations with the nonprofit’s stage of organizational development. Without proper stewardship, tension can arise when what an organization needs from its board transcends members’ understanding of their role .
