Expo is the most significant annual health and social care event in the calendar, uniting more NHS and care leaders, commissioners, clinicians, voluntary sector partners, innovators and media than any other health and care event. Expo 15 returned to Manchester and was hosted once again by NHS England. Around 5000 people a day from health and care, the voluntary sector, local government, and industry joined together at Manchester Central Convention Centre for two packed days of speakers, workshops, exhibitions and professional development. This year, Expo was more relevant and engaging than ever before, happening within the first 100 days of the new Government, and almost 12 months after the publication of the NHS Five Year Forward View. It was also a great opportunity to check on and learn from the progress of Greater Manchester as the area prepares to take over a £6 billion devolved health and social care budget, pledging to integrate hospital, community, primary and social care and vastly improve health and well-being. 10. Signs of grooming and sexual exploitation
Signs of child sexualexploitationinclude the child or young person:
• going missing for periods of time or regularly returning home late
• skipping school or being disruptive in class
• appearing with unexplained gifts or possessions that can’t be accounted for
• experiencing health problems that may indicate a sexually transmitted infection
• displaying inappropriate sexualised behaviour, such as over-familiarity
with strangers.

The Children's Commissioner's study found that:
• 72% of abusers were male.
• 10% of abusers were female.
• in 18% of cases genderwasn't disclosed.
• The age range of abusers was from 12 to 75 years.
• Where ethnic group was recorded,the majority of perpetrators were White
and the second largest group were Asian.

• initiate young people into the gang

18. Child sexual exploitation committed by children and young people
• In 2012 Barnardo’s reported an increase in sexual exploitation by
peers in eight of their services.
• They found young people were sexually exploiting peers either by
sexually abusing victims themselves, or by introducing children and
young people to abusers.*

22. How common is child sexual exploitation?
The Office of the Children’s Commissioner (OCC) estimates that
betweenAugust 2010 and October 2011, around 2,409 children
were confirmed as having been sexuallyexploited, with a further
16,500 being identified as at risk. However, the OCC says that
evidencesuggeststhe number is far greater.

25. What to do if you suspect a child is being sexually exploited
• The NSPCC recommends that you do not confront the alleged abuser. This may
place the child in greater danger and give the abuser time to confuse or threaten
them into silence.
• Seek professional advice. Discuss your concerns with your local authority's
children’s services (safeguarding team), the police or an organisation, such as
the NSPCC.
• If you know for certain that a child has been or is being sexually
exploited, report this directly to the police.
