Sound is created by vibrations of air molecules that are interpreted by the brain as having properties of frequency, pitch, amplitude or volume, and purity or richness of tone. The human range of hearing is between 20-20,000 Hertz, with accurate hearing occurring at 1,000 Hertz. Higher sound waves create louder sounds while lower waves make softer sounds, and closer wave patterns are perceived as higher pitch versus more spaced out waves creating lower pitch. Loud noise above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss, with decibels being the unit used to measure sound loudness.
