15. 不只可避免自體攻擊
1990 年代,在美國加州研究中心,鮑利 (Fiona Powrie) 和
同事將小鼠的 T 細胞群除去調節性 T 細胞後,注射到
缺乏免疫系統的基因改造小鼠體內。受贈 T 細胞的小
鼠發生了嚴重到可能致命的發炎性腸道疾病 ;
這種異常的免疫活性並不是直接發生在腸道組織中,
齧齒類和人類一樣,腸道內也住著龐大的微生物群,
每一公克的小腸組織內就有上兆個微生物。它們通常
無害,而且還能促進食物消化,驅趕其他也想寄居在
小腸內的有害細菌,例如沙門氏菌等。
在正常狀況下,免疫系統都會容忍這些有益的細菌群。
但在鮑利的小鼠體內,卻因移植的免疫細胞攻擊這些
益菌,而間接對腸道造成傷害,若是移植調節性 T 細
胞,則不會造成任何問題。
16. 不只可避免自體攻擊
事實上,同時注射調節性 T 細胞與其他 T 細
胞,將可防止腸炎的發生。大體上,免疫系統
似乎是處在一觸即發的狀態,隨時準備攻擊腸
道中的細菌,全靠調節性 T 細胞控制著。
免疫系統對其他有害外來物質的反應,狀況也
相同。不過,調節性 T 細胞可抑制過度反應。
就另一方面來說,卻也可能導致入侵物未能被
完全殲滅,造成病原潛伏和再爆發的機會。
舉例來說,有些研究發現,因為調節性 T 細胞
減弱了免疫系統的武力,使得免疫系統未能清
除感染胃部的幽門桿菌,而這類細菌正是造成
胃潰瘍的罪魁禍首。
