 What are systems Biology….??
Systems biology is
the Computational and Mathematical
modeling of complex biological
systems.
 Particularly from year 2000
onwards, the concept has been
used widely in biology in a variety
of contexts.
Example: Cells, Proteins

In molecular biology,
gene structure and
function
is studied at the
molecular level.
In systems biology,
specific interactions of
components in the biological
systems are studied –
cells, tissues, organs,
and ecological webs.
Molecular vs. Systems
Biology Biology


It is highly relevant in
discovering more complex
relationships involving multiple
genes.
This may create new
opportunities for drug discovery.
Advantages of Systems
Biology

Research has begun on larger-scale
simulations:
 Biochemical network level
 Simulation of Epidermal Growth
Factor (EGF)
 The Physio me Project
What’s to come?

Protein 53
Produces 53 proteins kilo Daltons
Guardian of the genome
Detects DNA damages
p53

When multiple biological pathways
interact with each other, it is called
biological network.
Biological pathways are far more
complicated.
Have no real boundaries.
What’s the Biological Networks..?

Systems Biology
New?? NO and YES



Systems biology: studying living
cells/tissues/etc by exploring their
components and their interactions
Major challenge is to integrate knowledge
of kinetics and genome-scale networks
Even without detailed knowledge of
kinetics, genome-scale modeling is still
possible
Conclusions

ANY QUESTION….??

fashionable catchword?
a real new (philosophical) concept?
new discipline in biology?
just biology?
........
