Approaches to Childhood learning – Class activity Record Sheet 
After every class Activity write into the record sheet. Add photos throughout the record. 15 records min required for portfolio. Add lots of images to illustrate your understanding.

Time plan: An hour or two 
Room and/or equipment requirements: print brush/table 
General Aim of activity – What will the final outcome be? ie. ‘To make an aeroplane with cardboard’ box. 
To make a sweet jar with the children and to let them see jars can be use for anything. 
Specific Learning outcomes of the activity – What will be learned by doing the activity? Ie. ‘To use fine motor skills using the scissors’ 
The children are learn how to print jars, learn to stick thing on to jar 
Steps for making or doing activity: 
Use images with short captions 
Step one: pick out a jar 
Step two : pick if you are going to print or cover the jar in Burlap sheets and maybe robbing 
Step three: gander all the items you will need 
Step four: start the activity by print or covering the jars 
Step five: finish the jars and leave them to dry 
Step six: put the sweets in the jar 
Step seven: bring them home
How will the child/ren benefit from the activity? 
They learn a lot of new skill and informant. They learn that jars can broke so you teach then to be careful with the jars. They see that jar can be use for other thing and they come in an size and any shape. 
Age group/s: (development level) 
4 years and up. 
How would you make the activity more inclusive? Principles of universal design 
They could make them in groups 
How would you adapt the activity to suit outside/inside? 
Could make jars in to candle holder or prince holders. You could get double said trap and use sand as well 
Simplify this activity: 
This activity is quite simplify there not much more you could simplify anymore 
Variations for the activity: How could you vary the activity? ‘Marbling using foam or egg whites instead’ 
You could use sand with double side trap and do different patter on them. 
You could make the jar for any event coming up e.g. Christmas, Easter ect. 
They can be candle holder prince holders

This activity is safe the only concern that maybe there is the glass jars broking 
Could the activity link to an external activity/group/ outing? ‘Visit to a farm/forest to see/do….’ 
No this activity couldn’t be link to the external. The you could is maybe to it as group activity 
Extensions for the activity: Could science, geography, history, culture, literacy, maths etc, be incorporated into to the activity? How? What changes would you make? 
Interactions with children: talk about…. Talk with your child about what they are doing. This will help them understand the physical and mental processes they are going through as well as giving them the vocabulary to describe it. "Look at how the paint splatters like that" 
You can talk to them and asked them question about the activity we are doing. Asked them question what they think we could do with the jars. 
Problem solving element? Make your child aware of the problem solving involved and ask them questions as needed to help them work out problems themselves, eg. "Why isn't the paint coming out now?", "Is the straw
reaching the paint when the bottle is tipped like that?", "How could you fix that?" 
The one problem is the jars could broke but you can do a risk task with the children and talk what to do with the jars. 
Evaluation of activity: What did think of the activity? 
I though the activity was a success as everyone in the group had fun doing and that the you could make the jars in to different thing like candled holder. 
Additional information: (images, books, articles, video links, websites etc.) 
Summary of your personal learning in points (at least 4) from doing the activity; 
 I learn that there lose of activity out there that you could do with the children sweets jar were just one of the ideas. 
 I made the sweet jars but I could have made lot of different thing with the jars. E.g. candles holder. 
 It great fun make and I think the children would like the activity very much 
 I know it would be something the parent would use and would like as I would like them.

Sweet jars in Childcare

  • 1. Approaches to Childhood learning – Class activity Record Sheet After every class Activity write into the record sheet. Add photos throughout the record. 15 records min required for portfolio. Add lots of images to illustrate your understanding. Name SR_______________________________ Date:13/11/14 Week number: Attended: Yes Name and image of the Activity Sweet Jars Materials used: Paint Burlap sheets Love heart stickers Glue Time plan: An hour or two Room and/or equipment requirements: print brush/table General Aim of activity – What will the final outcome be? ie. ‘To make an aeroplane with cardboard’ box. To make a sweet jar with the children and to let them see jars can be use for anything. Specific Learning outcomes of the activity – What will be learned by doing the activity? Ie. ‘To use fine motor skills using the scissors’ The children are learn how to print jars, learn to stick thing on to jar Steps for making or doing activity: Use images with short captions Step one: pick out a jar Step two : pick if you are going to print or cover the jar in Burlap sheets and maybe robbing Step three: gander all the items you will need Step four: start the activity by print or covering the jars Step five: finish the jars and leave them to dry Step six: put the sweets in the jar Step seven: bring them home
  • 2. How will the child/ren benefit from the activity? They learn a lot of new skill and informant. They learn that jars can broke so you teach then to be careful with the jars. They see that jar can be use for other thing and they come in an size and any shape. Age group/s: (development level) 4 years and up. How would you make the activity more inclusive? Principles of universal design They could make them in groups How would you adapt the activity to suit outside/inside? Could make jars in to candle holder or prince holders. You could get double said trap and use sand as well Simplify this activity: This activity is quite simplify there not much more you could simplify anymore Variations for the activity: How could you vary the activity? ‘Marbling using foam or egg whites instead’ You could use sand with double side trap and do different patter on them. You could make the jar for any event coming up e.g. Christmas, Easter ect. They can be candle holder prince holders The Learning outcomes linked to Aistear Exploring and thinking Identity and Belonging Well-being Communicating 6;5;3;2 1;2;4;5 2;5;6;1 1;3;4;6 2;3;4;1 3;6;4;1 2;1;4;3 4;5;6;1 1;3;6;5 1;2;4;3 4;1;6;2 1;2;4;6 3;4;5;1 2;4;6;1 1;3;4;6 6;5;3;1 Other curriculums: Montessori, HiScope..  Safety concerns? If any This activity is safe the only concern that maybe there is the glass jars broking Could the activity link to an external activity/group/ outing? ‘Visit to a farm/forest to see/do….’ No this activity couldn’t be link to the external. The you could is maybe to it as group activity Extensions for the activity: Could science, geography, history, culture, literacy, maths etc, be incorporated into to the activity? How? What changes would you make? Interactions with children: talk about…. Talk with your child about what they are doing. This will help them understand the physical and mental processes they are going through as well as giving them the vocabulary to describe it. "Look at how the paint splatters like that" You can talk to them and asked them question about the activity we are doing. Asked them question what they think we could do with the jars. Problem solving element? Make your child aware of the problem solving involved and ask them questions as needed to help them work out problems themselves, eg. "Why isn't the paint coming out now?", "Is the straw
  • 3. reaching the paint when the bottle is tipped like that?", "How could you fix that?" The one problem is the jars could broke but you can do a risk task with the children and talk what to do with the jars. Evaluation of activity: What did think of the activity? I though the activity was a success as everyone in the group had fun doing and that the you could make the jars in to different thing like candled holder. Additional information: (images, books, articles, video links, websites etc.) Summary of your personal learning in points (at least 4) from doing the activity;  I learn that there lose of activity out there that you could do with the children sweets jar were just one of the ideas.  I made the sweet jars but I could have made lot of different thing with the jars. E.g. candles holder.  It great fun make and I think the children would like the activity very much  I know it would be something the parent would use and would like as I would like them.
