Responsible Tourism Week is an annual event that takes place in October to promote responsible, community-focused tourism practices that maximize local economic and social benefits while minimizing negative impacts. The week highlights the importance of sustainable tourism development that considers environmental protection as well as the well-being of host communities and destinations. It encourages travelers to choose operators and destinations that adhere to responsible tourism principles.
The document discusses responsible tourism and its potential for cities. It argues that cities should take the lead in responsible tourism as they are major tourism destinations that can shape perceptions of entire countries. Cape Town is provided as a case study, having taken steps to become a more sustainable and responsible tourism leader through initiatives like increasing green public transport and prioritizing low carbon emissions. However, responsible tourism is still considered niche and travellers often prefer traditional holiday experiences over responsible ones, so more work remains to be done to mainstream responsible tourism.

This document discusses the vision and benefits of integrated townships. Integrated townships are self-sustaining developments located on the outskirts of cities that include residential, commercial, retail, educational, and sometimes industrial areas. They aim to reduce pressure on city infrastructure by providing modern amenities and a balance of residential and commercial spaces, along with recreational areas and open spaces. Integrated townships offer walkability, mixed uses, housing options, and sustainability to support wholesome living without pollution. They have amenities like schools, hospitals, parks and retail to provide a high quality of life under one roof. The document argues integrated townships will be in demand in the future as cities expand boundaries and need horizontal growth solutions.

The market is growing significantly and is projected to make up 25% of global tourism by 2020. This is driven by aging populations and disabilities affecting a large portion of older adults. This document discusses how eMarketing and eBrochures can help market travel in Africa in the digital age. It notes that while travel agents still drive most overseas business to Africa, online marketing through tools like maps, virtual itineraries and eBrochures is now essential. The SmartGuide approach creates an interactive online map with geo-located content about locations in Africa to help visualize trips. It also produces virtual itineraries and eBrochures that can be shared with travel agents and operators to better promote African destinations and increase their share of the global travel market. The aim is to provide digital marketing tools for the industry to sell travel in Africa.
Travel agencies were traditionally retailers that arranged travel services on behalf of suppliers like airlines and hotels. However, the rise of e-portals allowed customers to directly book travel online.
While e-portals provided benefits like convenience and lower prices without commissions, they also posed a major threat to traditional travel agencies. As more people began booking independently online, travel agencies saw a sharp decline in business.
Now, travel agencies have had to adapt by adopting e-portals themselves or focusing on services like cruises that are still commonly booked through agents. However, independent agencies have found it difficult to survive as e-portals have become dominant for arranging do-it-yourself travel.
