This document summarizes a responsible tourism pilot project at The Peninsula All Suite Hotel. It discusses the hotel's environmentally friendly initiatives to improve sustainability, save costs, and create jobs through recycling. It also covers the hotel's hospitality grading to understand competitors and pricing, BEE compliance to increase business, and OHS Act compliance for staff and guest safety. People management initiatives like performance reviews, motivation, and communication are mentioned. The hotel has also implemented a CSI plan for marketing, BEE points, and team motivation. In summary, the hotel discusses its responsible tourism initiatives and 21 years of success in maintaining occupancy while reducing costs and developing its staff.
Responsible Tourism Week is an annual event that takes place in October to promote responsible, community-focused tourism practices that maximize local economic and social benefits while minimizing negative impacts. The week highlights the importance of sustainable tourism development that considers environmental protection as well as the well-being of host communities and destinations. It encourages travelers to choose operators and destinations that adhere to responsible tourism principles.
The document discusses responsible tourism and its potential for cities. It argues that cities should take the lead in responsible tourism as they are major tourism destinations that can shape perceptions of entire countries. Cape Town is provided as a case study, having taken steps to become a more sustainable and responsible tourism leader through initiatives like increasing green public transport and prioritizing low carbon emissions. However, responsible tourism is still considered niche and travellers often prefer traditional holiday experiences over responsible ones, so more work remains to be done to mainstream responsible tourism.
As part of the Responsible Cape Town pilot project, a workshop on World Tourism Day 2012 saw several leading Responsible Tourism businesses sharing their practices and recent actions on the theme of Sustainable Energy.

This document discusses responsible tourism and urban renewal in Port Elizabeth, South Africa through two case studies. The first case study examines the semi-pedestrianization of Govan Mbeki Avenue, the city's main street, and market research that found most people travel there by minibus taxi or walk. The second case study looks at redeveloping the Donkin Reserve, a heritage property, to include public artworks linking it to the city's history and institutions through an open commission process. Both case studies aim to boost the local economy, foster social interaction, and enhance the environment through tourism and urban development projects.

Over the past decade, the city has adopted responsible tourism policies and action plans, launched awareness and training initiatives, and developed tools and resources to support the industry in adopting responsible practices. Key accomplishments include signing a responsible tourism charter with industry partners, establishing a steering committee, and developing standards and guidelines to guide sustainable tourism development.
