9. Corporate Social Responsibility
“CSR” Port Community
CSR is a tool used by companies to
establish positive relations with
their surroundings and to gain
competitive edge. (Klimek and
Dabrowski 2018, P. 81)

10. CSR Port Community: Exploring “Social”
o Community Impact
o Employment
o Political and Legal*
(Stein and Acciaro, 2020)
11. Community
Impact:
Identify
Stakeholders
Four Stakeholder Groups:
• Macro-environmental Level - entire business
system, plus society at large.
• Second Level - corporation micro-environment -
immediate environment, suppliers and
distributors , competitors, customers, the local
community and the financial community.
• Third Level - the business organization-
superiors, subordinates, other employees and
trade unions.
• Fourth Level - peers, family, friends. (Lantos
2001)
12. Community Impact: Engagement
Stakeholder-oriented Perception:
• Organizations exist within networks of stakeholders, face potentially
conflicting demands of these stakeholders and translate the demands into
CSR objectives and policies. (Lindgreen & Swaen, 2010)
Engagement Strategies:
• Donations; Sponsorship awards; Community investments; Community
developments (Ozuem, Howell & Lancaster 2014).
13. Employment:
Training &
Scholarship
Need – Fill The Gap:
• Study by Betty Aigbogho Arhelo shows that, on average, 20 % of
Caribbean port workers are provided with new skills in the areas of
technology, human resource development, information
technology, health and safety and handling of dangerous goods
and customs documentation (Arhelo 2017).
• World Bank Study Logistics Competencies: Workforce of the future
must address logistics skills gap.
Build the Pipeline:
• Reposition training from cost context to competitive advantage.
• Transition training to “digital and knowledge” based economy.
• Invest in next generation of workers – scholarships, internships,
apprenticeships, K-12 outreach.
14. Reporting Port Sustainability
Need Global Standardization
Need Participation Globally
Need Benchmarking Economic, Environment and Social (Address Scale – TEU’s, Tonnage, Goods
Value, Passengers Carried)
