• 23 million passenger & 2.65 million
tons freight traffic per day
• 1.34 million employee
• Annual procurement volume – more than $10
Billion
5. Social aspects
• Will remain prime source of public transport
in future with increased no. of passengers
every year.
• Connects virtually every part of India from
smallest village to biggest cities.
• Provides employment to more than 1.4 million
people

units in underdeveloped Bihar to create 3000
overall jobs.
Social sustainability initiatives
11. Economic aspects
• Provides low fare travelling options
• Generation of revenues from freight transport
• Needs to overcome competition created by
low cost airlines.
• Needs to overcome losses incurred during
previous years.
• Procurement volume is also high.
15. Economical sustainability initiatives
1. Around Rs.15000 Billion capital raised from
LIC for development of Indian Railways.
2. Replaced incandescent lamps with CFL; there
by reducing energy bills by 9M $/year.
3. 358 items reserved for procurements from
SMEs in India.
4. Started procuring cheaper power for central &
western railways resulting in saving of Rs. 30B
Annually.
16. Environmental aspects
• One of the largest rail network in world, hence
high level of CO2 emissions which can be
reduced.
• Generates large amount of wastes due to
public transport
• Scope for implementation of renewable
energy technologies which has already
started.
20. Environmental sustainability initiatives
• CO2 emission reduction -
1. Implementation of CReDI technology to diesel locomotives
2. Use of 5% bio diesel blended fuel
3. Regenerative breaking project for IGBT based locomotives for
getting carbon credits.
• Energy saving -
1. LED lights at major railway station ( already implemented at
Vijaywada railway station
2. Solar panels over roof tops & rail wagons
• Installation of windmill on surplus land -
1. a 26 MW wind farm in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan
• Implementation of green toilets -
1. Reduction in water consumption by 1/20th to that at present.
21. Conclusion
Sr. No. points
1. Based on social economic & environmental
initiatives, Indian railway is steadily becoming
sustainable.
2. But present rate of improvements needs to be
accelerated.
3. Initiatives taken are giving desired results
