Surgical oncology deals with the surgical treatment of cancer. A surgical oncologist removes primary tumors and metastatic disease through procedures like resection of liver or lung metastases. Diagnosis involves physical exams, labs, imaging and biopsies to stage the cancer. Treatment decisions are made through a multidisciplinary team approach involving medical, surgical and radiation oncologists.

Choledochal cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis in all patients with a history of biliary colic, recurrent cholangitis or pancreatitis with associated dilatation of bile duct, particularly if they are <40 years of age. Delay in the diagnosis increases the incidence of associated biliary pathology and suboptimal surgical therapy
