Micelles are colloidal particles
formed from aggregation of
amphiphilic molecules (ex:
surfactants ) in aqueous solution
above CMC ( Critical Micelles
Concentration )
Amphiphilic molecule (ex: surfactant)
below CMC in water posses
hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail
this form called (monomer)
Above CMC , Amphiphilic
molecules aggregate to form core-
shell shape called micelles ,and this
process called micellization .
CMC?
CMC defined as the concentration of surfactants above
which micelles will form so we could deduce that CMC
value is a concentration related value .

Advantages of Surfactants Nano Micelles
• Biodegradability
• Biocompatibility (Not cause any toxic or injurious effect and
not causing immunological rejection)
• High surface activity
Surfactant micelles
Surfactant Nano Micelles could solubilize oils or water-insoluble drugs by
incorporating the solubilize into the core of micelles
Preparation of Surfactant Nano Micelles
• Using Ultrasonication
Surfactant dissolved in distilled water> CMC ----- the solution sonicates for 10- 20 min ----
the resulting micellar solution is filtered .
• Using Vortex
Surfactant dissolved in distilled water> CMC ---- the solution vortexed for 15 min ---
the resulting micellar solution should be filtered
Characterization of Surfactant Nano Micelles
• FTIR ( function groups & active sites)
• Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) (morphology)
• Malvern Zeta Sizer ( particle size & zeta potential)
Therapeutic Applications
Both biosurfactant and chemical surfactants used for therapeutic applications like:
 Anti-microbial applications ( so it used in health care as a disinfectant )
 Anti cancer applications ( drug formulation , emulsifiers)
