PRESENTATION ABSTRACT
The Industrial Internet of Things has been heralded primarily as a way to improve operational efficiency. But in today’s environment, companies can also benefit greatly by seeing it as a tool for finding growth in unexpected opportunities. In the future, successful companies will use the Industrial Internet of Things to capture new growth through three approaches: boost revenues by increasing production and creating new hybrid business models, exploit intelligent technologies to fuel innovation, and transform their workforce.
Check out the highlights from our 2014 #IoTuesday Twitter chats, and join us the third Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. ET to discuss how the Internet of Things is developing.

Blockchain for Post and Parcel: Incremental Change or Exponential Differenceaccenture
Imagine a world with seamless end-to-end global trade, instant identification validation and digitized package verification. Blockchain has the potential to drive profound positive change for the post and parcel industry.
Digital technology has changed how people shop, bank, travel, and live. Real-time location services, free global communications, and information on demand have become the norm, raising consumer expectations for more personalized customer experiences, when and where they want them. The insurance industry is no exception, as heightened consumer expectations are driving innovation and creating opportunities for new entrants to challenge industry bellwethers. As a result, consumer-facing industries have had to adapt or perish.
Many insurers are struggling to enhance their customer experience while facing stiff competition from digital savvy, data-intensive, agile insurtech companies. The digital disruption is radically altering how insurance is bought, distributed, serviced, commercialized, and ultimately, perceived by the general public. The result is the emergence of insurtech companies engaging customers in ways traditional insurance companies have never offered before.
The traditional model of insuring customers for specific events (or circumstances) is being supplanted by a new model based on a lifecycle of customer needs. Equally important is the capability to go from responsive to predictive practices more accurate than conventional actuarial techniques.
The enabler of these new capabilities is effectively leveraging the expanding quantities, sources, and distributions of data. Doing so requires innovative data-driven technologies designed to discover and integrate this data with semantically enriched data fabrics that strengthen the insurance industry’s fundamental use cases—making new ones possible.

IOT for logistics has a plethora of applications to discover. To not get overwhelmed by the endless opportunities presented by IOT, Logistics solutions providers and 3PLs often start with prioritizing the requirements. The first step involves seeking a solution for the part of the supply chain which has the biggest impact on the overall efficiency of the logistics company. Warehouses and omnichannel transportation units catered by transportation industry present itself as one of the most decisive segments where supply chain process starts. Last mile delivery being the end part, the transportation business owners are trying to embrace IOT for logistics in an inward approach. That means that the most sought out IOT solutions are designed for the warehouses, distribution centers and dispatch process of the supply chain.

Presentation at the October Scope Event on Internet of ThingsLora Cecere
How do we do we make decisions at the speed of business? Traditional supply chain processes are batch, and out of cadence with business. How do we rethink these processes to have the right data available when we need it. In this presentation, we discuss the inclusion of streaming data in supply chain visibility. It is not sufficient to ask the question of "Where is my stuff?" without the opportunity to use the data in better decision making.
Leveraging IoT for Product Visibility across the Supply Chain Capgemini
During transportation, medicines and medical equipment need to preserve their integrity. In order to monitor key indicators in real time (e.g. temperature, pressure, vibration, humidity), J&J worked together with Capgemini to build a proof of concept solution for a smart container. The solution aggregates data from various sources (traffic patterns, weather data, GPS) and on board sensors, analyzes it in real time for exceptions and tolerance violation. It also includes email notifications for exception/rule violation and dash boarding capabilities for various devices. Using IBM technology and Capgemini pre-configurations, the solution was developed in six weeks. This validated the requirements, the technology stack and the industrialization potential.

Internet of Things (IoT) - We Are at the Tip of An IcebergDr. Mazlan Abbas
You are likely benefitting from The Internet of Things (IoT) today, whether or not you’re familiar with the term. If your phone automatically connects to your car radio, or if you have a smartwatch counting your steps, congratulations! You have adopted one small piece of a very large IoT pie, even if you haven't adopted the name yet.
IoT may sound like a business buzzword, but in reality, it’s a real technological revolution that will impact everything we do. It's the next IT Tsunami of new possibility that is destined to change the face of technology, as we know it. IoT is the interconnectivity between things using wireless communication technology (each with their own unique identifiers) to connect objects, locations, animals, or people to the Internet, thus allowing for the direct transmission of and seamless sharing of data.
IoT represents a massive wave of technical innovation. Highly valuable companies will be built and new ecosystems will emerge from bridging the offline world with the online into one gigantic new network. Our limited understanding of the possibilities hinders our ability to see future applications for any new technology. Mainstream adoption of desktop computers and the Internet didn’t take hold until they became affordable and usable. When that occurred, fantastic and creative new innovation ensued. We are on the cusp of that tipping point with the Internet of Things.
IoT matters because it will create new industries, new companies, new jobs, and new economic growth. It will transform existing segments of our economy: retail, farming, industrial, logistics, cities, and the environment. It will turn your smartphone into the command center for the both digital and physical objects in your life. You will live and work smarter, not harder – and what we are seeing now is only the tip of the iceberg.
Mohanbir Sawhney, Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation Clinical Professor of Technology Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University presents at the 2012 Big Analytics Roadshow.
Companies are drinking from a fire hydrant of data that is too big, moving too fast and is too diverse to be analyzed by conventional database systems. Big Data is like a giant gold mine with large quantities of ore that is difficult to extract. To get value out of Big Data, enterprises need a new mindset and a new set of tools. They also need to know how to extract actionable insights from Big Data that can lead to competitive advantage. The Big Story of Big Data is not what Big Data is, but what it means for business value and competitive advantage.... read more: http://www.biganalytics2012.com/sessions.html#mohan_sawhney

Certus Accelerate - Building the business case for why you need to invest in ...Certus Solutions
Becoming an analytically driven or cognitive business is a journey.
Businesses will be able to rapidly capitalize on new opportunities if they have invested in the foundations of their information management systems.
BIG DATA has to be the hottest topic in the boardrooms of blue chip companies - organizations with access to vast amounts of data that promises to have a massive impact on their businesses... But if you're not Amazon, Google, Walmart and Tesco what does it mean to your business? What about MOTOR DEALERS for example?
Now companies are in the middle of a renovation that forces them to be analytics-driven to
continue being competitive. Data analysis provides a complete insight about their business. It
also gives noteworthy advantages over their competitors. Analytics-driven insights compel
businesses to take action on service innovation, enhance client experience, detect irregularities in
process and provide extra time for product or service marketing. To work on analytics driven
activities, companies require to gather, analyse and store information from all possible sources.
Companies should bring appropriate tools and workflows in practice to analyse data rapidly and
unceasingly. They should obtain insight from data analysis result and make changes in their
business process and practice on the basis of gained result. It would help to be more agile than
their previous process and function.
I have been drinking from a virtual fire hose since joining my most recent technology company, Anametrix, a cloud-based digital analytics innovator. A whole new book opened for me on how digital analytics can both increase top line revenue and reduce spend by shining a very bright flashlight into marketing efforts.
We are all painfully aware of the data explosion problem. In 2011, the Gartner Group stated that information volume collected by businesses today is growing at a minimum 59% annually. The rapid adoption of social media has also caused customer data to explode in the last few years, creating entirely new challenges for marketers. It is now imperative for organizations to think differently to accommodate the variety, volume, and velocity of their growing customer-related data.
This is where my recent experiences come in: I have personally seen how digital analytics can harness the power of massive amounts customer-related data. It can literally simplify the accelerating complexity by providing deep visibility – as well as clarity – into the effectiveness of various marketing efforts, across both online and offline channels.
I will now outline the role of IT and CFO in adopting cloud-based digital analytics solutions, discuss the benefits as well as challenges of moving to this emerging category, and provide some illustrative examples on how digital analytics can transform your marketing organization.

Why React Native as a Strategic Advantage for Startup Innovation.pdfayushiqss
Do you know that React Native is being increasingly adopted by startups as well as big companies in the mobile app development industry? Big names like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest have already integrated this robust open-source framework.
In fact, according to a report by Statista, the number of React Native developers has been steadily increasing over the years, reaching an estimated 1.9 million by the end of 2024. This means that the demand for this framework in the job market has been growing making it a valuable skill.
But what makes React Native so popular for mobile application development? It offers excellent cross-platform capabilities among other benefits. This way, with React Native, developers can write code once and run it on both iOS and Android devices thus saving time and resources leading to shorter development cycles hence faster time-to-market for your app.
Let’s take the example of a startup, which wanted to release their app on both iOS and Android at once. Through the use of React Native they managed to create an app and bring it into the market within a very short period. This helped them gain an advantage over their competitors because they had access to a large user base who were able to generate revenue quickly for them.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
Globus Connect Server Deep Dive - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
We explore the Globus Connect Server (GCS) architecture and experiment with advanced configuration options and use cases. This content is targeted at system administrators who are familiar with GCS and currently operate—or are planning to operate—broader deployments at their institution.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

2. We are on the verge of a major sea change in
supply chain management
This revolution is a result of the availability of huge
amounts of real-time data
This data is routinely generated through
interconnectivity on the internet between business
partners through the interconnected world of
enterprise software systems and smart products
3. Firms which can use big data to redesign their
supply-chain processes to reduce costs will be
winners in the future competitive landscape
Big data can combine unstructured information
coming from disparate data systems and analyzing
data trends in real-time, extracting relevant
information and helping management to make real
time decisions
Optimization algorithms and advance machine
learning can be used to look for and exploit
observed patterns and correlations among data
elements and make supply chain decisions.
4. For example data coming from customer reviews
on a particular product can be used to optimize
inventory position. Big data can understand the
semantics behind customer reviews and
automatically adjust future Purchase Orders based
on contract terms
Traditionally the above example will require people
from sales to analyze reviews, demand planner to
look at inventory positions, inventory control to
provide latest inventory positions and funnel the
information to management to take a decision.
Imagine if this process can be automated for
thousands of products carried by a firm
5. This now becomes a Single step process instead of
multiple like traditional supply chain management,
and hence significantly reducing costs
This single-step process looks for the best
relationship among all of the data and then makes
a decision
These algorithms can be implemented and
evaluated for performance robustness based on
historical data at any firm
6. Big data needs real time information's from
multiple sources to make effective decisions
Data is generated from scanners, CRM,
sales system, web based data such as
product reviews on various sites, ERP tools
and smart products
All of the above systems can be connected
via internet of things platform and generate
a huge amount of quality data for decision
making Big Data systems
7. Big data needs real time
information's from
multiple sources to
make effective decisions
Platforms such as
Microsoft Azure can be
used to collect data
from multiple areas of
business and integrate
it with ERP systems such
as SAGE X3
8. Automated Scanners can be capture exact
inventory movements and positions within the
warehouse
Sensors and devices on the machinery will transmit
status of products being manufactured and vital
machine health statistics
Web sales systems will capture sales, customer
buying behaviour and unstructured data such as
comments
All of the above data can be captured using the
Microsoft Azure platform
9. Web services technology in SAGE X3 can be used to
capture in run-time data coming in from the IoT
platform
Mongo Db, one of the databases, which SAGE X3
uses can be used to hold and analyze unstructured
data such as customer reviews from websites
Big data can then be used to interpret data from
X3, front end e-commerce systems etc. to
automate the decision making process
Imagine the possibility of reducing costs and
making the organization respond automatically to
changing customer needs
10. Successful adoption of this change requires
It will require strong involvement and buy in
of all functions in a firm
Strong level of integration both up and
downstream in the supply chain
A shift in the mindset of the decision
making process
Change is coming and those that who
embrace this change will gain a strong
competitive advantage
