supervisors and other industry professionals about the benefits and
challenges of working with youth

themselves and also set up a site visit. This should happen

office.
• Introduce them to the staff, and show them their work
stations.

The First Day
What do your interns need to know the first day?
> Who is the designated supervisor or point of contact for
interns?
> Introductions: who else will they be working with?
> Location: Where will interns work?
> What are the procedures for entering the site, clocking in,
etc.? Do they need an ID?
> What is the dress code for the site?
> Facilities: Where is the bathroom, break room, is there a
place to keep a lunch?
> What are the safety procedures at your worksite?
> Are there any areas that are off limits?
10
The First Day (continued)
Intern Assignment 1: Establishing Learning Goals
> Students should arrive the first day with a set of
approximately six learning goals that they have identified
with their teacher.
> These skills can be interpersonal, technical, or academic, as
appropriate to your workplace.
> Please review the goals with your intern(s), and identify
potential tasks that will give them a chance to practice those
skills.
> The actual goals and tasks can change over the course of
the six weeks; a plan ensures that you and your intern have
a common starting point for the experience
11
Weeks 2, 4, and 6
Intern Assignment 2: Task Planner (Total of 3)
> Interns are asked to break down one task that is assigned, to
understand different aspects that go into a work task:
 Instructions: How are instructions given?
 Resources: What equipment / tools / materials are
required?
 Collaboration: Who else is involved in the task?
 Timeframe: How often is the task done? When is it due?
 Authority: What decisions can the intern make (if any?)
 Quality: How do you know the task is done? Done well?
> This exercise ensures that the student understands your
expectations, and helps them meet them by allowing them to
share their experience and receive support in class.
12
Coaching Interns for Success
Interns are able to succeed at work when they have:
> clarity of goals
> immediacy of feedback
> balance between the challenge presented
and their skill / ability to meet it
Helping them find balance in these three areas support your
intern in learning to maintain focus on the task at hand, and
encourages them to work hard by finding pleasure in the
task.
This psychological state is called flow, and it’s where we do
our best learning, and our best work
