The Samson Summer Student Program is an opportunity for students, who are continuing to go back to school in the fall, a chance to work during the summer time. Students have the opportunity to work with the business in their community, such as the Band Office, Community Initiatives, Maskwacis Cultural College, the Howard Buffalo Memorial Center (HBMC), the Friendship Center, Nipisikopahk Education Association, and many other business offered within the Program. This program has given students an income to help with their future for school and has given them an excellent amount of work experience that would look amazing on a resume. Plus, acquire a reference letter. The summer students of MCC show the multiple skills students learned working for the program.

2. Jerilee Buffalo
Working and coordinating the Youth
Summit was a great learning experience
for me. It was a lot of work to organize and
set up the event. I learned how to
coordinate an event with the help of my
team. I am quite glad that the event went
well and successful. Planning and working
on this project/event helped sharpen and
improve my social, organizational and
professional skills.
Working at MCC had been a great
experience for me. I had been able to
adjust to the work environment easily and
the work had been easy to adapt to. I
learned many things working here. I
answered incoming phone calls, did file
work, made documents, and helped
organize events. This program gives
students an amazing opportunity to
developed work experience and that is
what I did at Maskwacis Cultural College.
Christina Crier
I work as a summer student in the
MCC library. I enjoy working in the library,
it has no limits. The library offers so many
things from books to technology. I put
metadata such as the Library of Congress
Call number into the MCC integrated
library system and I help articulate English
words to syllabic with help of our Cree
staff for the shelf markers and book
displays.
I also volunteer for the Bar-B-Cue
yearly event for the past seven years. I
enjoy working with the MCC staff and
helping the communities to promote
literacy readings. In my Education, I had
returned as an adult learner and I also
achieved my Early Childhood Educator
level 1, 2, 3 with Honors and went into my
university studies in Bachelor of
Education. The MCC staff is great people
and they always encourage me to move
forward in my education journey.
Tina Johnson
I’ve been working in the MCC
library as a summer student. I am
updating the social work pathfinder.
Collecting and entering data, looking for
information posted on repositories. I am
conducting a literature review. Getting the
information is a lot of work, finding the
documents and categorizing them into
themes. I have been researching for
healing, cultural, indigenous, social work
traditional practices, role of elders, and
related topics.
It has helped me to identify the
different research topics, where to look
and find what I was looking for. This will
also help future MCC students,
researching for these specific items while
writing their papers. I am in the
Indigenous Bachelor Social Work
Program. This experience will help me in
the future, with annotated bibliographies
and writing literature reviews for my
papers.
